I received Saints Row : The Third today and I returned from work a while ago looking forward to giving it a go.

So I have went through the 15min or so installation of my retail disk (onto steam) and I have been keen to fire it up.

Then it instantly starts downloading a 2gb patch which on my crumby connection up here is gonna take me 45 minutes. I click play... it says I gotta wait until patch is complete.

The bloody thing woulda played had it not just went ahead and patched itself :(

Is there an option on steam that would avoid something like this in future? Or is it like this with all Steamworks games?

Can't be as bad as Red Orchestra 2 when that was released, I had to download the full game at about 8gb, then the next day download a few gb to get it working, then when I signed back into steam later that day I had to re-download the full game + patch at around 10gb. Even then it still didn't work :p

Brilliant, it finally downloads. I get to game Menu, go down to Display options, then it crashes to desktop as soon as I select it...

I then try to load the game 3 more times and every one just disappears back to desktop with no error. argh!

Sounds like something may have gone wrong when the game updated. Try this (it may mean you need to download some more files, but i it fixes the problem it's worth it).

Right click the game -> properties -> local files - > verify integrity of game cache

You can also turn off automatic updates while you are in those menus.

Just did that and it said one file was bad so it redownloaded it...

I reloaded the game and it did exactly the same again :(

this person is getting exactly the same issue here.

Im downloading latest graphics drivers now, and ill restart pc in a second. Its frustrating me already lol

You're complaining at 45 mins?! Jeez some people don't appreciate what they have, my connection would take 2 hours at least to download that!

Dont appreciate what I have? lol. I have a game I bought, waited to be delivered, then couldnt play from disk the second I installed it. Thats crap in my eyes :P

Have you tried running in a different Direct X mode (use 9, or if you already are try and use 10 or 11)

The game loads up fast. Goes from steam to Developer Splashscreens etc within a few seconds..

It then finishes that bit and goes to the notice about Autosaving logo.. then a loading screen "Loading 5%" in bottom left begins. It speeds up to 90% then next goes black screen then back to desktop.

First time I ran it the game got beyond that point, hit the menu. I moved down the options and it then blacked out.

Never made it that far again yet.

Even if you'd been able to play it there's no guarantee it would have been stable. That's what patches are for. In addition any progress you'd made may have been lost if saved games didn't carry across once you had patched. Finally, it's sod all to do with Steam ;)
