My gaming PC is starting to struggle. It's ~7 years old now (minus upgraded GFX) and its starting to struggle -- probably CPU bottleneck and lack of RAM. I think it's time to splash out, but I'm totally out of the loop. Here's what I have now:

  • Intel Core i7 920
  • EVGA NVidia GTX 780
  • Gigabyte EX58-UD3R
  • 6gb 1600mhz ddr3 triple channel
  • Corsair HX500 PSU

I can spend somewhere between £1500 and £2000. Keeping as close to the £1500 mark as possible. Here is what I am thinking so far, but I must admit there was a lot of random picking involved, and I'm sure there are probably better options for me. I have purposefully left out the graphics card, as I will pre-order a GTX 1080.

For now I'm targeting 1080p, but I expect I will be upgrading to 4K and/or VR at some point.

Here is what I have in my basket so far. With the GTX 1080 im guessing it will take me within that £1500 - £2000 range:

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £1,033.93
(includes shipping: £0.00)

Some of my thinking:

CPU: Plonked for the i7. I'm aware the i5 might save me money for something better elsewhere in the system...open to suggestions.
Mobo: I struggled with this...so much choice I simply just dont know!
Memory: Am I right in saying mem speed doesnt matter as much as it used to? I definitly need 16GB as I deal a lot with photoshop also which can consume all of that itself.
Cooler: I like the idea of the AIO water coolers. I dont have the knowledge/care about full watercooling systems so this seems like decent middle ground.
Power supply: Love Corsair PSU's in the past. Build quality is fantastic.
SSD: Should I be looking at M2?
Case: Again, so much choice. Main thing for me is that it has tons of rooms inside and hides the cables.

Thanks guys!

1) CPU+board bundle saves £££

2) Board is award winning - https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18730403

3) 3000Mhz is plenty, little gains to be honest going over 2666Mhz.

4) A cheaper 280mm cooler with RGB LED.

5) Cheaper PSU with more grunt, but nothing wrong with Corsair RX or RMi series.

6) m.2 SSDs are honestly not noticeably any faster than a good SATA one.

7) Case can take all sorts of coolers/rads etc.

That's a nice rig you've picked yourself mate. You could spend £100 less on the mobo and still get a decent 'gaming' one. I love my ASUS Pro gaming Z170...
