Righto, got a bit of spare cash and just bought myself 22" Iiyama 2ms gaming goodness and I am thinking of upgrading the 512mb 8800GT but I am at a bit of a loss as to exactly what to.

I am a heavy gamer, COD4, Crysis and would want to improve upon the 22FPS the 8800GT delivers in Crysis.

So, would the 3870 X2 be a good choice, I will be gaming at 1680 x 1050 and I like all the details as high as possible.
My Mobo is PCI-e 2.0 and as I understand it the 3870 X2 with the bridge chip doesn't fully take advantage of this, only 1.1 ??

Or should I just wait and see what develops in the nVidia camp over the coming weeks ?

There is never a good time to upgrade, but I think I want a change sooner rather than later.

Thoughts guys ??

22fps in Crysis is good at that res mate. Be happy with what you have for the moment and wait for "The next big thing".

All other games will run smooth as butter at that res on the GT or atleast they should as I have no problems with my 2900XT.

As far as I know the 3870 X2 takes advantage of the PCI-e 2.0 interface, it would want to with the amount of data throughput needed for the two chips in the one slot.

22FPS? Is that in DX10?

Crysis is about the only game the 8800GT can't handle at that res with full details. So it all comes down to whether you are willing to upgrade GFX just for Crysis. Or you can save some cash and turn down some details. I turned Shadow, post procesing, particles to medium and motion blur to off.

Nowt wrong with 22fps, thats normal for Crysis, there is no cards out that can run it well, even 3x Ultra's in Tri Sli get around 30-40fps with lower in places, save your money, 1x game aint worth it, GT hammers through everything else with ease, if you just want to run that 1x game, then wait a couple of years till some cards appear that can run it. :)

I agree, i didnt play Farcry when it forst came out as my card couldnt do it justice.

Played it recently maxxed out and it was great :p

no, no, 22 FPS on Crysis was using the 1280 X 1024 (old TFT 19") I am assuming I will get less with the new 22" screen running 1680 x 1050 rez.

I don't play Crysis as much now I completed it, Its mainly COD4 around 30-40 hours a week :)

crysis i get around 32fps with my 2900 at 774/825 @ 1680 x 1050 , high, dx9, vista64.. which i don't play anymore because ive finished it.. :D

cod4 i get around 80fps with my 2900 at 774/825 @ 1680 x 1050 , max settings, vista64..

so i would say a 3870 would be good.

i get about 25-30 fps in crysis with everything but post processing on very high, post processing on medium with a 3870 XT, not X2, ati have done well getting the drivers better for DX10

Thanks for the input guys,....just had the delivery at home of my new Iiyama Prolite E2201W-B1 22" screen, the wife signed for it as "not checked" just as well, I have just rushed home and the screen looks terrible.

The bezel is uneaven, I can see a bump in it top left, the bottom has a larger gap on the right hand side (where the backlight bleed is most noticable) the backlight bleed looks bad at the moment but I will see how it is after a few hours use.
No dead pixels though, so thats a plus.

I might Return this and spend the money I was putting aside for a Gfx card and get a better monitor....Jeez the third one I have tried in 4 months. :(
