New 295 GTX not working at all - help!

My system is as follows -

EVGA nForce 680i SLi Motherboard
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 clocked to 3.25Ghz
GeForce 8800 GTX
Corsair 4GB DDR2 XMS2-6400C4
Hiper HPU-4M670 670W PSU
NZXT Lexa Classic Series Case

Having recently acquired a 30" panel I also decided to beef up the graphics and PSU, so I got -

Coolermaster Real Power 1000w
Gainward GeForce GTX 295

PSU is installed and works well (had to completely dismantle the PC to fit it), however the new GPU is not working at all.

Admittedly the 295 doesn't fit quite as well in the case as the 8800, there seems to be about a 3mm gap when the card is installed if you're looking at the metal plate that the two the screws go through, although it looks like the card is fully engaged in the slot when the screws are tightened and the little plastic release on the slot is also engaged.

When I turn the system on I get a long beep followed by 2 short ones, which would indicate that the card has not been detected and I can hear windows loading from the HD. I see as well that the fan on the card is not spinning either.

If I put the 8800 back in the system boots without any issue.

So the question is - is the card faulty or is it something I need to do - I'm thinking possibly a bios update or is it indeed still not fully seated in the slot?

Any help or advice really appreciated.

also make sure that it is seated correctly
when i fitted mine i thought it was fully in the pcie slot and it wasnt

Always get the latest bios for the motherboard in this scenario.
ill 2nd that given that the 680i is not PCI-E 2.0 which normally i say would be a issue (i run a GTX280 in a P35 based motherboard) but since the GTX295 is SLI on a card it might be tripping up someware , also as always if you have a 2nd pc or a friends pc you can test it in even just to see it reach the bios stage, is also worth doing

Thanks for the replies.

After having another look at the problem last night I could see that the tail of the cards backplate wasn't aligned with the slot in the case. After flexing the cards tail in the right direction it slotted in much better and there was no gap when it came to attaching the screws.

So, with the card in place and it plugged in I crossed my fingers and pressed the power button.....this was answered with the reassuring single beep and the screen came alive to tell me that Windows was loading.

Phew - so after mopping by brow and punching the air a couple of times the next job (after loading the latest display drivers) was to get rid of Ntune as I loaded it as part of my bios investigation, but I find it makes the boot time much longer and my system unstable - this was confirmed when Crysis crashed at the level load screen.

So with Ntune gone and the fact it was very late in the evening, I tried Crysis and it was v smooth at 1920x1200 with 16x antroscopic filtering and the hacked DX10 mode. I also tried the Half Life Lost Coast video stress test at 2560x1600 with everything at max and got 170fps before I threw in the towel and went to bed.

It looks like its working correctly - is there a good benchmark I can run that'll tell me that the new card is working at its best?

Also, does anyone know where I can get the latest bios for my board? The eVGA website seems to have moved on to the newer boards.

I was hoping someone would say that - I think if I can confirm the card is giving me the right performance and a bios update is essentially not going to make any difference, then I think I'll just start having some fun with it.

Fear 2 and Fallout 3 are itching to be played on the new hardware. :D

You can test the Crysis benchmark and see how mach close you score with the following results to see if there is performance loss or something .

For example core i7 950 with GTX295 PCI-E 2.0

Crysis benchmark 1920x1200 0xAA DX10 veryhigh 40.5fps
Crysis benchmark 1680x1050 0xAA DX10 veryhigh 48fps

My system q6600 3,2GHz with GTX295 PCI-E 1.1

Crysis benchmark 1680x1050 0xAA DX10 veryhigh 44fps (you see 4fps loss because of q6600 or PCI-E 1.1)
Crysis benchmark 1680x1050 8xAA DX9 ultrahigh(mode) 53fps (DX9 run much better)

I'm more amused by how much the Q6600 beats the ultra-new i7 by.

I think you need to have a closer look as those benches.

I ran the benchmark at 1920x1200 16xAA DX9 with the hacked config file and got 40fps - so I think its working ok. I've got some bench figures for Far Cry 2, so I'll see if there is a similar benchmark I can run in that, just to be sure.
