Hey all, landed me a bargain 55 plate honda civic sport 1.6. Silver, 95k miles, facelift model. guys moving abroad so got it cheaper than the value.
Just wondering what mods I should do with it. thinking basic cheap stuff like new speakers etc, Not a huge amp or sub in the boot (i like music but not bass blaring like a nob) it had lights in the footwell looms so I am going to get them re fitted (bulbs went, never replaced) and it needs a new bulb for the in dash lights as one side has gone (where the petrol light and stuff is) He included a Type R backbox and exhaust system, brand new I believe, worth fitting this? its currently got a twin exhaust. (2 pipes side by side)
What do you guys reckon I should do up with it? not thinking of a remap until ive got at least 1year ncb (passed in december - only 2.5k a year to insure this as my own car, cars in my name too, parents as named drivers for the rare chance they drive it)
1 quick question too though, importantly, When I got it, hes told me the tax disk blew off the other day and hes submitted the application for the replacement - I currently have the fiesta insured until the end of the month when im cancelling the policy on that car, as its being sold, and the civics on the drive right now, so can sit for a while, just wanting to know how long I need to wait. guys going to drop it off to me when it arrives as he doesnt move abroad for 3 months yet.

Thanks, Id appreciate advice.

It has disco lights, your insurance is two and a half grand, the tax disc 'blew away' and you want to turn it into a chav wagon. This has all the hallmarks of an amazing story.

nothing constructive to say, dont post. jog on.

or, you could not be a nob and think automatically that because i want to do some slight modifications im a "daft chav" don't be so judgemental, just a suggestion... I dont want a huge spoiler or 22s, I want some minor mods.

Engine remap isn't a slight change. You've just passed your test and you're already in a 1.6 and talking about a remap. You're what's known as lamppost fodder aka a daft chav. And the fact that you used the term 'nob' pretty much proves my point.

Grow up. Get some experience behind the wheel and then think about playing with your engine. Take it from someone older and wiser

I called you a nob because anything else would've gotten me a warning for swearing.
I clearly said, CLEARLY, READ THE OP, that I dont want to fiddle with remaps and engine work until NEXT YEAR. 1-2years NCB.
It's not like ive got a VXR, or a type R. I only wanted to see what minor upgrades are worth it, e.g. alloys, lights, exhaust at a push. air filters at a push.
You are whats known as a judgemental old git, who thinks just because someone has got a 1.6 at 18 they are destined to end up through a tree or something. You know nothing about me, nor my ability to drive, yet think I am a "daft chav" destined for a smash. Jog on mate.

You state 1.6 like its something special? Given you are 18 your ability to drive won't be anything special but like so many others you certainly seem to think it is.

A remap on a NA petrol isn't worth bothering with just FYI.

sorry, didnt realise the remap club was only for the 2 litre plus club. Shedloads of people have mapped cars and not all of them are chavs! for example, a friend has his vrs tdi 1.9 remapped to over 200bhp and he still enjoys 45-50+ mpg. he works in IT. he did it because he could, and had the money, not because hes a chav.

Hardly the point, i think you need to do some research.

Spot of education for you. The VRS TDI is a TURBOCHARGED engine. Not a NATURALLY ASPIRATED engine.

All turbocharged engines enjoy good gains from a remap. I'll state this again - your 1.6 NA engine will gain practically NOTHING from a remap.

Engine size is pretty irrelevant to a remap. The VRS needs more than a map to reach 200hp assuming its the 130 also.

Diesels remap well, N/A petrols don't. You would be lucky to see 10bhp on a 1.6. And i mean really lucky. Its just not worth it.

thanks, the first constructive post of the evening.
Appreciate it.

On another note, this is all that needed to be said - dont **** my car off - just say, its not worth it, its clearly not a crap car, they are hugely popular cars, very reliable.

Think I'll just do the alloys and a decent in car entertainment system and leave it at that.

You've just countered your own point there. Your friend has a tdi. It has forced injection thus remapping tends to be far more effective. You, as has been said several times, do not. It is useful on some cars, for example a Mazda 2 as their 1.2 actually uses the same block as a 1.4 but is mapped to function as a smaller engine. This is not the case with your car.

Change your attitude and people may be a little more helpful / receptive to you.

Ill change my attitude when people that dont know me stop slating my driving ability/car i own.

All that was needed was, car isnt worth remapping, just keep it stock for a few years, then consider a. some exterior mods, or b. an upgraded car thats more powerful & cheap to insure.

Dont understand how people can expect me to be all jolly when all they've done is slate me or my car.

You fit a stereotype. Passed two months ago, appear to think you're an amazing driver and already want to stick tat onto and into your car. What do you expect?

oh, so lets say im black, live in london, must be a criminal then. a woman, must be a rubbish driver. an old person, a kerb crawler.

What point did I say I was amazing? I never. I said how can people judge my ability to drive, when they dont even know me. None of you know how well or poorly I drive.
I don't think I am Lewis Hamilton, or a pro driver, however I don't think that all older drivers are better. It is a well known fact that most people that drive today would stand a cat in hells chance of passing a test today. most are happy to admit that.

Yes, most accidents are caused by younger drivers, and yes, they are normally in "boy racer" cars. But again, thats just a stereotype. Just because a car has a decent sound system and alloys does NOT mean it is a boy racer car. Most accidents by younger drivers are caused by them thinking they are better than they actually are, or are showing off to their mates. I am very cautious when driving, Not that it matters to a lot of you, you have already made your mind up that I must be a "boy racer" because I drive a 1.6 and want to upgrade it.

Any actual constructive points are still welcome by the way, I'd like recommendations on lights, alloys, etc.

no one slated your car, they only pointed out it probably won't be worth remapping.

they did however say you need to do some research, which I will agree with.

Telling people to 'jog on' isn't the way to get help...

edit: Why do you need recommendations on lights? Did it not come with lights?
just leave the car as it is and enjoy it!

TBF, Ive sat and thought and I like the lights. I just dont like everything stock.
I appreciate my attitude could have been better, for that I apologise.
Its just the entertainment system I may change, or just whack in my nexus 7 and a decent docking station to keep it in place, and something to hook the sound up with,
by the way - I've just checked online (didnt know you could - but you can :) ) that the vehicle is taxed, and until 01/06/2013. so the guy wasn't lying. I do think I still have to wait. I've printed out the sheet displaying the vehicle is taxed however to save hassle getting nicked I am just going to not drive it till i get the tax disk.

Out of interest, if for any reason (it wont, I know the guy fairly well now and his mum is friends with my colleagues at work) he doesn't get me a new tax disc, can I just re apply? currently waiting on all documents to arrive, I've signed off for the car to be in my name and am waiting on the paperwork they send off to come through.

First car I've bought myself, was really chuffed :)

I just came back on to actually offer more advice and justification about my earlier comments but to be honest, having seen your attitude continue I don't think I'm going to bother.

Good luck, try not to crash and harm yourself or anyone else and try not to mess up the handling of your car too much.

Oh and the thing you say you needed was covered in my first post.

And now your tone has changed again, Jesus!

Right, actual advice mode, never waste you money on an air filter. The stock one is better. Proven by fifth gear a few years ago. Could stick the type r exhaust on. Looks pretty. Make sure you tell your insurers. Careful with alloys. Can screw the handling up and tbh civics are normally ok esp on the sports. Don't drill holes for speakers. You'll screw the resale value and look like a daft chav so nobody'll buy it. Leave the lights alone or you'll find the boys in blue will put you every five mins to check they're legal and that you are. Think that just about covers it.

Oh, if you tint the windows, rear only (kind of) and don't get any awful foils

OP - my only constructive point is to leave the car as it is. It sounds like you like your car and so enjoy it. If your insurance is already 2.5k, adding mods is only going to increase that figure and that's assuming they will cover you - many insurers don't allow mods under 25 yrs old.

Drive safely, enjoy the car and save any mod money for something better further down the line.
