Sometimes the answers to problems just aren't obvious.
Today I decided to spend an incredible $10 at Goodwill (A US Charity shop) to buy an old Viewsonic VA1716W monitor. Nothing special, 17" 1440 x 900. I was using one of my father-in-law's 1280*1024 monitors and didn't want to keep using his old kit, so I bought this instead, plus it was widescreen which was a tiny bit nicer for watching movies and coding.
Anyway... The issue I was having was that I had a slow moving horizontal refresh line moving slowly up the screen. I thought, OK, maybe something needs to be sync'd here. So I changed the rate from 60hz to 75hz and the screen got worse with the line flashing around the screen instead. Then I tried the monitor options to try and sync phase etc, but no options on a this budget monitor existed.
So, I started unplugging things to see if anything was interfering, and eventually swapped sockets. Bingo. The monitor was perfect with no flaws. Simply changing the power socket fixed the issue. Sometimes, the answer to problems comes from thinking around the situation
