new 300gb hdd, cant see it.. help!!!

just bought a 300gb drive (maxtor) and i cant see it it my computer but its in device manager>? help

Right Click My computer > Manage > Disk Managment > Right click the black unformatted/unallocated space > Format > NTFS basic.

Got it working and i copied all my files onto it and in diskeeper there is a load of reserved system space? why. i dont want to use it for system just storage. any ideas?
