hi all, trying to install my new 4870 but as soon as i install the drivers and re-start it stalls during the windows loading bar to a black screen and then shuts down, it will run without the drivers and in safe mode. i have tried the drivers on the disc and the latest from ati. I have an enermax noisetaker EG495ax (485w) psu with two 18 amp 12v rails, the gpu box says it needs two 75w pci-e feeds could the psu be the problem.. if i put my 8800gt back in it loads first time every time

It seems as though you dont have enough power to power the 4870 (hence you being able to boot with the 8800GT), and the card doesnt seem to be faulty since the card runs fine in safe mode.

Its always best to check your system power consumption before buying components, heres a link to a PSU calculator: http://extreme.outervision.com/PSUEngine

I think the general rule for that calculator is to add 100W to the final calculated score to get the PSU Wattage that you need to run your system at peak efficiency :) Hope that helps, maybe its an idea to test your 4870 in someone else's computer to see if the same thing happens.

I run mine on a 300w PSU in my ITX PC and have been for about a month for several hours a day with no issue so far.

How old is the PSU? If it's a few years old it wont be providing what it used to.

Did you remove the Nvidia driver properley?

Use Driver Cleaner/sweeper or CCCleaner to remove all remnants and reinstall latest

ATI drivers.

I would try this first before splashing out on a new psu.

A good quality 485 watt psu should be able to handle one 4870. If you can try in another pc (maybe a friends) and see if it does the same thing.

thanks all

im going to try all the options suggested, i will try the 4870 in my mates pc that i built few monthes back for him (550 w psu & 4850 ) bit confusing geckovich running a 4870 on 300w psu though.?? i will try some other drivers aswell.

I'm REALLY pushing it there, but I'm a big boy so if it all goes to hell I'm willing to face the consequences.

Running a 4870 at stock, 2x2GB 800mhz RAM at 1.8v, laptop 7200rpm drive, laptop DVD drive, a single 120mm fan and a slightly undervolted E8500 at stock speeds.

Even under load the PSU is nice and cool to the touch, I don't know if this has any technical bearing but I see it as a good sign :)
