Hi everyone,

Now that the 4080 is incoming, I am thinking of making the move to 4K. I presently have an LG 34UC98-W ultrawide which I have had for over 6 years now. I am thinking of a nice large 16:9 4K display this time - Is 32" the optimum size? I would like a high refresh rate and full HDR capability. Is OLED the way to go? My budget is up to around £1100.

Any suggestions?

Thank you.

All I can do is tell you my own experience which will no doubt be completely different to others.

I used to have a monitor very similar to the one you are using now (the non-curved version). I made the mistake of replacing it with a very expensive 3840x1600 monitor and have regretted it ever since. To the point now where I am about to replace it with a qd-oled 3440x1440.

The main reason for my regret is that I mostly want a monitor for gaming and honestly 3440x1440 is still a fantastic resolution for games ESPECIALLY if you want high refresh rates.

I have a 3080 and there are plenty of games it really, really struggles with the 3840x1600 display, and that's only 2/3 4k! A 4080 is not going to be enough, hence my decision to go for 3440x1440 again. Increasing refresh rate is a great option but increasing resolution above 3440x1440 is, in my opinion, just makes things more difficult to drive. Games are always coming out that are more and more demanding and you are fighting a constant battle with 4K trying to get a good refresh rate. In my opinion it's better to just avoid the problem altogether and just settle with 3440x1440. You could have course buy a 4090, but that is a crazy amount of money on top of the price of a new ( high quality ) monitor.

There are no OLED panels in 32" size
And because of inherent fragility of that fancy organic part, who knows when they actually come to market.
(first promises were made like dozen years ago)

As for FALD LCDs there should be new models coming with AUO panel, though above that budget.
But since summer there hasn't been anything new about Acer X32 FP and at this rate they can re-announce monitors again in CES.
Though in 27" size there's CoolerMaster Tempest GP27U coming with same tech based panel.
(TFT Central should be getting review monitor soon)
