Looking at selling my sig rig and going for a simpler single card build.

Was thinking a 5820k
980ti
500gb ssd.

Price is £1500
No os monitors or peripherals needed.
Only the tower and things in it.
Must have a 500gb ssd no others needed have a hone server for all files just games need to go on this.

Have you considered 3440x1440 over 4k? Less pixels to push, so more likely to run well on a single Ti, and a more pleasing aspect ratio. I see you've already got a 4k, but unless it has Free/G-Sync then I can't see a single card offering a pleasant experience..

Have you considered getting one or two GFX cards and seeing what you think of it with your current CPU.

Is there really much point in moving from a 4790K to a 5820k for this purpose?

Surely all your really after is the larger SSD and the step up from the 290X's into the 980TI to accomplish what you want.

To swap the CPU just seems like wasting money.

^^ Also that. 4790k is a solid CPU as it stands - can't see you getting much more out of a 5820k. I went from 2500k to this and it's noticeable but not night and day. Although I'd disagree with 290X Crossfire => 980Ti being a "step up"

I change gpus quite often at least once a year and not bothered between nvidia or amd so gsync freesync would not be worth the extra over my current one.

Not had any issues running 4k gaming on this screen atm and not noticed tearing over the last 20 years of gaming so not gonna fork out loads now for it.

True
When crossfire doesnt work though it would be and cooler and less power usage

A 980Ti can power a 4k monitor just fine, at least mine managed it. Mine was running at 1525/2000 when gaming and it was getting playable FPS even with very high-ultra settings (GTA is the most intensive game I played, just a word of warning) - If you turned down a couple of settings you could easily hit 60 FPS, but I was happy enough with 40-50 average.

As for your setup, there's no reason to change CPU at all, you can pick up a 500gb SSD for the region of £120 and a 980Ti or two for the rest of your budget. But in honesty, I'd get one 980Ti, try it, and if necessary, get another... But from my experience of using a 4k monitor, a 980Ti was sufficient.

To be fair crossfire 290x should be good when crossfire is working right and better than a single 980ti.

yeh when crossfire is working right is the key word there. still waiting for elite dangerous profiles :(

also micro stutter from 2 cards.

290's will also use loads more power and make loads more heat than 1 980ti but they do give better results when they work properly

decided to strip the watercooling off and selling all that and the 2 X 290X 8GB's gonna grab a noctua D15, EVGA GTX980ti & NZXT H440.

Then may swap the mobo, cpu & ram out at a later date.
