I have just upgraded to 1151 and I am a bit unsure about the temperatures I am getting. I am using an Alpenfohn Matterhorn with a (admittedly old) tube of Arctic MX-2. I am getting around 30 idle but about 68-70 running Prime 95. Is this too high?

I removed the cooler to check the paste and it looked good with complete coverage

I am not sure if it makes any difference but I have XMP enabled.

Any ideas?

That's pretty normal for prime 95.
On skylake prime 95 uses more power than normal use.
70 isn't great but it's not unusual.
Many people avoid prime 95 on skylake as it's excessively demanding.

As above prime95 is not really great for testing cpus heat output. Even so its staying under 70 so during gaming or more sensible workloads it should be fine.

When I build my 6700k the temps were similar to yours. After about a month they dropped to low to mid 20s idle and below 60c. I do not know if anyone else has had this kind of thing happen. I test coolers, and because I re-test with same cooler at beginning and end of each session to verify everything is the same I noticed this gradual lowering of temps. While I did not notice an difference in a day of testing, I did see the 1-1.5c drop each week or so. My guess is it was chip to IHS TIM seating in over time.
