I have just installed Windows 8 from Windows 7 This was on a 238gb SSD it is now telling me that I have 101gb free It would appear that 8 takes a lot of space on the HD? Or should I have done a complete virgin install - format hd etc.etc. I did not retain anything of the Windows 7 installation when installing 8

if you run disk cleanup you will find files left over from windows 7 that 8 backups.

you can safely delete these.

As said above, the upgrade path will kepp all the old folders which you can delete. Look for Windows.old.

I would very much recommend reinstalling it fresh though.

Thanks a lot for the input. Decided to do a fresh install from DVD player. As my disk is ostensibly an upgrade I was not certain if it would work from the DVD but it does. Now showing 211 GB free form 238gb. Excellent result - thanks a lot
