New 80gb PS3 out on 22nd August. 300 quid on the nose. What I do find slightly strange is:

This PlayStation 3 model does NOT feature backwards compatibility with PS2 games, or the memory stick card readers found on the old 60GB Model.

Maybe its just me, but ive always liked the idea of beaing able to fire up old favorites every now and then. Any thoughts ?

I don't find anything particularly strange about it, it's the same hardware as the model with a 40gb hdd just with an 80gb hdd instead.

We already knew we wouldn't be getting the same as the old U.S 80gb model (which had the same hardware as our 60gb unit)

Looks like i'll just add a bigger hard drive to my 40gb one.

Same, no real advantage for those users who already own a PS3. Buying a new HDD and putting it in yourself is surely the cheaper option?

Have Sony shot themselves in the foot by using generic laptop 2.5" HDDs and not a custom HDD ala Microsoft?

For the UK market there is absolutely no advantage of having the more expensive PS3's?

Well isn't it £299 with MGS4, 80GB and a Dual Shock 3? (atleast that's what ive seen) A better buy than the 40GB & sixaxis jobby then? Sony want the PS3 to be a media based machine, not just games, hence the standard upgradeable HDD.

Not from what I can tell, £299.99 gets you just the 80GB console on the site I'm looking at.

No definate answer on the controller although this site seems to hint it's a SixAxis controller not a DS3.

The new controller for PS3 has been created by refining and improving the world's most popular PlayStation controller which has shipped more than several hundred million units worldwide. The controller for PS3 employs a high-precision, highly sensitive six-axis

The 40GB is also £299.99 on this site at the moment, I thought these were coming down in price what with the new 80GB model coming out

I would have thought it would be replacing the 40Gb tbh and being able to put in your own laptop harddrive is a pretty decent advantage imo, 320Gb for about 70quid. So I doubt Sony have shot themselves in the foot in that respect as its a very attractive selling point for potential customers. N I cant say I care if an organisation loses out to the consumer anyway.

It's an advantage to users yes, but Sony aren't making $$$/£££ when you upgrade your console.

That's what I was trying to get at :)

Its a direct replacement to the 40GB as far as im aware, so keep your eye open for some decent prices when retailers try to sell the 40GB ones off.

A fair point, but to me it was one of the aspects that clinched it for me, and i know my parents will be buying one when playTV comes out and using it as a PVR/blu-ray player with a 250gig hdd.

It's a fantastic selling point, whether they come out on top due to sales or lose cash due to no 1st party harddrive attachment only they can answer.
