Instead of removing all the 3rd party software, can I just format using my retail W7 disc, enter the Acer key during setup, or does it not work like that?

Haven't tried it with Vista or 7

I'm pretty sure it will be fine. I have tried some installs on other brands like you suggest and they have activated without issues.

I dont think there is a distinction between retail/oem keys and the media you use to install as there was with XP

Yes I done that with my Acer laptop :). I would recommend backing up your installation beforehand, preferably making backup images using the supplied Acer software.

I've got a HP laptop (see sig) and tried it... it came with Vista64 HP installed (Hewlett Packard's OEM version with LOADS of crap!), but I had a Retail Vista64 HP disc floating around, so tried it as I wanted to get rid of all the extra Hewlett Packard stuff...

Didn't work!... wouldn't activate!... phoned Microsoft to try and sort it!... "Computer Say's No!!!" she told me that a Hewlett Packard OEM key won't work on a Retail copy! (at least for Vista)... Dunno about Win7 or Acer though!!. :)

Did this on my Dell Laptop, used one of my Win 7 retail to re-install, entered the key from the Laptop. Had to use the automatic phone call to activate, As it failed to do it over the net.
