Hi,
I am a bit confused with all the X1000 X800 business with the ATI cards - I don't know which one is actually better because they are similarly priced.

I have been looking around and found a Gecube Radeon X1300 512mb DDR2 AGP for £75. With 512mb I thought it was definately a good buy, but there are other X something cards with 256mb at the same price. Is this card rubbish? My spec is below, not a great machine by todays standards but I don't play many games anymore but I want a half decent card for when I do have a game.

Am I right in thinking that the GF 6800 is similar or better than the Rad 9800 pro? That was in another post. I don't mind either Nvidia or ATI.

Thanks

Don't go near the X1300!!!

Since you have a budget of £100 and already have a 9800Pro, the only feasible option is to try and get a 6600GT or even better a 6800. The 6600GT is slightly faster than the 9800Pro, especially in newere games. The 6800 is probably slightly faster than the 6600GT at stock, but the AGP variants have good unlocking potential and have high overclocking headroom. I have one i can testify it's a great card. Bought it for £105 a few months ago, but I don't think you'll be able to find any brand new, so you better look at the online auction sites. You can almost get 6800GT performance out of them, but not quite ;)

EDIT: I went up from a 9800 Pro aswell, and get a large increase in performance after overclocking ;)

The X1300 is fine as a budget card but don't get it as an upgrade - it's a fair bit slower than the 9800Pro! It cannot properly utilise the full 512MB memory on the card either so the extra memory goes to waste

The X1600 is a good card but the X1600Pro isn't quite as good as the 6600GT. It wouldn't be a great upgrade from your 9800Pro really

I'd agree with Fx-Overlord and go for the 6800 standard. At stock it's quicker than the 6600GT and it also has the potential to unlock from 12 pipes to 16 pipes further increasing performance

If you can afford it the BFG 6800GS on This Week Only for £135 inc VAT would be the card to go for. This performs like a 6800GT so it'll be a huge boost in performance over your 9800Pro and it's currently got £30 off making it a great buy

For top whack performance on AGP, you would be better waiting a couple of months for the 7800GS prices to drop a bit. The price will definitely drop, as manufacturers will be keen to shift AGP stock.

This model is apparently going to retail at £160 when it arrives in the UK.

HI there

Push the boat out a little and get the BFG 6800 GS, they normally go for around £150 ish and more but are far cheaper at the moment on OcUK's This Week Only page. :)
