New AGP Card

Hi all,

I am currently still using AGP as I don't have the money to upgrade my full system.

I currently have an ATI 9800 pro but am looking to upgrade one last time on AGP.

My system had Dual AMD 2400+ MP's with 2.5GB Memory.

It only has 4x AGP so I know I will not get the full performance that 8x offers.
I also understand that there could be a bottle neck with the CPU's and the AMD chipset.

I'm wondering if I will notice and difference in games by upgrading the graphics card or should I just stick with the 9800 pro until I can afford to build a new system?

A new system will be years away so I want to try and get the best I can out of this one for the time being.

So my question is:

Is it worth upgrading and will I notice the difference in games and what are your AGP recommendations?

Thanks for your help.
Dan

Look for a 2nd hand 6800GT/X800Pro/XL, It would give you a healthy boost. I wouldnt buy anything new right now tho, as there are no AGP bargains to be had. In a few weeks there might be a AGP 7600 card produced, so depending on price, that might be pretty good value.

What about the Gainward BLISS GeForce 7800 GS+ SILENT 512MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (AGP) - Retail (GX-032-GW)?

It's on offer at £264.32 and has GeForce™ 7900 GT GPU running at 450MHz+ with 512MB 1250MHz+ high speed GDDR3 memory and 24 pixel pipelines.

I don't know if anything better than that will come along on AGP.

Seeing I don't have the money for a complete system build will that card give me good performance and will there be much difference over my 9800 Pro?

Thanks for your help.

As has been said, get a secondhand 6800gt/x800xl and be done with it, the 7800gs is actually worse than these FAR cheaper cards in some games, and only a few fps (10 MAX) in others. It's really not worth twice the money.

Thanks for your help, you have been very helpful :)

One last question before I go for a GeForce 6800 GT.

Will it be able to support the 1680 x 1050 resolution on a Viewsonic VX2025?

If he wants the 7800GT he'll have to upgrade to pci-e anyway, so that choice is kinda obsolete.

Yep, theres only the 7800 GS available in AGP which may not be much good to me as the rest of my system will probably cause a bottle neck.

I have a 680w power supply so it will power it. The 7800 GS is double the price of a 6800 GT which is a lot especially if I can get similar performance from a 6800 GT.

Another vote for the 6800 gt
I have an 6800le softmodded and water cooled in a shuttle and they are great cards and can run all games at atm quite well,

yeah get the AOpen 6800gt, had mine awile now and runs sweets as :) its quiet too when using gainwards free util "EXPERTool". i run mine with forceware 77.77 and every game i've got has no probs, though the bf2 demo did'nt like them so if you wanna play that you'll prolly need newer ones.
