New AM4 Build - Could Use Some Advice :3

Hey everyone, I'm wanting to finally build a stronger rig, going with AMD this time, and would appreciate help on scouting components and making sure everything is fine together and all that.

For starters, I'm going to salvage what I can of the old rig, and then later down the line keep that as a second PC, media server etc. This means I won't need a GPU to start with, and maybe my PSU will be good as well.

I render a lot of files in both AE & PP, so CPU performance is a big one for me. Here are the parts I've looked at so far:

- AMD Ryzen 7 2700 Processor (Is the 2700x worth the extra £100?)
- MSI B450 TOMAHAWK Socket AM4 ATX Motherboard
- Corsair CMK16GX4M2D3000C16 Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4 3000 MHz C16 XMP 2.0
- Corsair Carbide Series 275R Mid-Tower ATX Gaming Case

This is what I have to transfer:

- Corsair Hydro H100 x 240 mm Radiator Dual 120 mm PWM Fans Liquid CPU Cooler
- XFX 650W XXX Edition Modular '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply
- Sapphire HD 7970 VAPOR-X GHZ 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express
- Samsung 840 EVO 250GB x 2
- Seagate Barracuda 500GB

I've literally just installed the H100 AiO on my old rig, but it does support AM4 according to the docs so that is fortunate. I will eventually add a new AMD GPU and place the 7970 back into this rig, I was looking at the AMD 580 8GB but that won't be immediate.

Any help is appreciated, this is the part I genuinely hate xD

I have the same ram and motherboard and for the budget range, they are a great choice. This is paired with a 2600 rather than your 2700. I think you will be very happy.

However... Can you not wait a bit? With Ryzen 3000 around the corner, you could either pick up a 2700 cheaper or a 3000 equivelent for the same price but better performance. Also potentially get a better mobo in a b550 variety? Although I have only seen x570 mobos shown at the moment.

Zen2 is out in about a month, and will be a big upgrade (if the hype train is true) over Zen1+. If you can wait i would, I know thats always the same with technology but this IS worth waiting for.

However notes on your parts, The 2700x boost much further over the 2700 so unless your overclocking, its the better bet to get the 2700x. Overclocking is pointless with the 2700x because you will lose single threaded performance as it can boost upto 4.3ghz but you wont be able to overclock past 4.1 (all cores) unless you get a golden sample.

With The memory it might be worth getting some 3200mhz CL14 stuff instead, not that 3000mhz is going to kill ya.

As has been mentioned, wait for the new Ryzen range to be launched as you will probably get something more suited to your needs. The indications are faster base and turbo clocks and improved IPC so a similar 8C/16T will perform (from memory) about 15%-20% faster.

Or You could pay less as 2700 gets cheaper.

Your PSU should be ok however we don't know how old it is nor how hard a life it has had. You need to decide...perhaps using a PSU calculator with the age of the PSU in if it is older than 3 years.

RAM may actually be worth paying more for this time round as apparently Ryzen 2 will benefit from up to 3666Mhz this time so consider an upgrade to a faster clocking RAM.

MB (older ones anyway) may be BIOS upgradeable to the new Ryzen but it is manufacturer dependent. I know ASUS have confirmed but others are still playing their cards close to their chest. This means with a few feautures missing, you may be able to use a B450/X470 however, you may wish to use the new chipsets as they become available. There are apparently quite a number of options.

Even more it keeps higher boosts to bigger number of loaded threads, because of higher TDP ceiling:

Here's another graph showing clock speed vs. number of loaded threads with various Ryzens:

MSI also has new BIOSes with new upcoming CPU support, like in here:

Of course BIOS needs to be updated to support CPU before putting in that new CPU.
(except for some mobos with built in BIOS flashing protocol working even without CPU)

Thank you everyone for the advice, as you can see I'm well out of the loop at the moment.

I'll take a backseat and wait for the new releases & benchmarks to see which to go with, then post again once I know which way I'm going.
