A quick Google shows they are socket F, not AM2 as yet..

bummer will have to stay will the 600 then for now been thinking of getting either the 5000 or 6400 black edition and the swiftech compact and seeing what i can get out of it then.

You really wouldn't be making a good decision "upgrading" to a 5000/6400 from your 6000. It's already a good chip, normally capable of at least a couple hundred mhz more.
Speed wise I doubt you'd see much difference, maybe a bit of a speed drop if you went for the the 5000.

Wait for new chips.

The 23XX series of Opterons (Barcelonas) have actually be actually been out for a couple of weeks. However, they are Socket F (1207) chips and won't fit in the AM2 sockets.

The Phenom chips are slated for some time around the 11th of November... they should drop straight into a compliant AM2 socket with a BIOS update. However, the newer cores have some funky tricks up their sleeves, namely split power planes and HT3.0 which won't work in older AM2 boards (obviously).

hmm need a new cpu are OCUK gonna have the NEW AM2 opterons in? on the 11th? the 6000 is bugging me :( seems to be the lagging in my system needs a little boost think i might get the swiftech 120 compact n set it up for am2 n wait till the optys arrive :)

How much ram do you have? :) it may be worth upgrading to faster / more ram instead of just buying a new cpu.

I highly doubt a 6000 could be lagging that badly?

As mrthingyx stated, the OPTERONS are Socket F and already out. I highly doubt OCUK will bother getting these in as very few people use server boards and the cpu speeds are only 1.9 & 2 Ghz.

The desktop AM2 PHENOMs are slated for release sometime in November and the figure being touted around atm is 2.5GHz at launch.

Nah there was the reasonable socket F board released for the Quad-FX style platform, it was pretty expensive when released, probably still is.
It's still just a K8 chip at end of the day, not mindblowing stuff.

Sure someone from here had the board actually.

A colleague at work has just got one of these chips for his gaming machine, he keeps telling me that it'll wipe the floor with my E6600. Is he right, do AMD finally have a contender?

I think he's trying to justify a costly purchase tbh... From what the internet says, they're not that amazing.
Guess we'll get a better idea when there are actually some desktop chips out, at the moment there really isn't any point for home useage.
