I already have a dedicated gaming PC, I basically want something to run 24x7 to keep a couple of clients/VM's logged in to certain MMORPG games. From the research I have done I believe the 7850k iGPU will be enough for this. It doesnt have to be amazing or blazing fast, its more for day to day use and keep a couple of gaming clients logged in.

I'm not sure about the ram? I saw things like Kingston Beast 2400mhz etc, I want 16gb of ram though for the VM's.

I believe the PSU will be enough at 350w with no dedicated GPU.

The other ++ about this system is to keep things low wattage since it will be on 24x7. I believe it will be lower wattage than a lesser CPU + 750ti for example but correct if im wrong? or maybe a r250?

Any advice?

Hi,

APUs love fast RAM to make the gfx side of it run well, you may not be interested in this? also I am not sure about the board, I would prefer to use a A88 chipset to guarantee the possibility of some overclocking.

yeah I heard they like fast ram. was trying to find some 2400mhz like the Kingston beast.

the board tbh I just picked a random one didn't look into too much. something to fit in the case that's about all I checked.

not sure if a APU or cpu+750ti or CPU+r250 would be better though in the performance/power ratio. it has to be as low wattage as possible since it will be on all the time. 5-10w difference I'm not bothered about but I can't for example stick a high end card in it and leave it on 24x7. the electricity would kill me. I guess I could also consider under voltage and under clocking the GPU
 
You can change the TDP of the APU in the BIOS on A88X to make it run ultra low power/heat.


There is a cTDP option in the BIOS, it is Disabled at default.

It has two other settings 45+65W
 
so do you think the APU alone is the best for performance / power ratio. I read its a decent little chip for what it is. by comparison the laptop I use now has a 8800m gts and a dual core Intel CPU and runs the clients. the laptop is on its way out tho hence this post.
 
It is a decent little chip and the AMD A88 board tend to be well specced for the money (plenty of SATAIII/USB3 internal and external).

But some Intel CPUs are even more less power hungry but obviously do not have the same quality onboard gfx.
 
yeah while I don't need amazing gfx capability I still need a little and the and APU seems much greater than a hd4600.

I just dunno if the APU alone or a Intel chip + 750ti would be much difference in power consumption under load.
