I currently have a CEOL Picollo.

I am not immediately upgrading to 5.1, but I want the option on the amp to run 5.1 if needed.

Wharfedale 9.1 bookshelves
BK Monolith Plus subwoofer
Samsung NU7400 TV currently.

PC usage on the TV.

No other set top boxes.

So amp with good future proofness, crossover, possible mic for positioning speakers.

Budget 250 - 300.

Thanks.

pre outs?

So if I went to floorstands that amp may be no good in the future?

Think the port quantities are enough for me.

On one of the RX-V585 reviews I have noticed "Sonic hardness undoes most of its good work "

Sounds like a deal breaker ?

Also does it do 4K 60 HDR 444 Over HDMi?

I'm not been fussy I wasnt fully aware what it meant but since the review pointed it out as a problem I was a bit like oh no. Might try that amp still, 275 in richer sounds

Onkyo TXNR686 , 326 and it seems much better rated and feature rich? What do you reckon to that one?

I plan on having it on top of a unit so ventilation shouldn't be an issue.

One idea that most would consider outrageous, in the immediate short term if I wired up a center and rear left and right channel with some satellite speakers from a Logitech Z5500 would it at least give me some sort of surround sound experience?

You really need to go have a listen.

I've ordered it from Amazon, if it isn't to my liking I can simply return in. I'm not very fussy but if something does bug me I have to sort it and I won't be happy, so hoping that won't happen and it'll be fine.

I'm just wondering if the 2.1 which is the Monolith Plus and the Wharfedale 9.1's for music then have the other 5 Logitech satellite speakers for "7.1" to have a play with the surround sound and dolby atmos.

I know I'll have to listen to determine if the satellites will suite my current needs, but I was just exploring the thought of using these Logitech satellites, perhaps some people would consider it outrageous or doing a disservice to the wharfedales and the Monolith.

Yep, some sort, for sure ;) :D

The Logitech satellite speakers are 8 Ohms, and when running with their own sub they're good for games and okay for a bit of background music as long as you're not too fussy. But as a standalone satellite to partner with proper AV gear? ... Not really up to the task.

Try them by all means. Stick them on the Piccolo in place of the Diamonds and see how you get on. I think you'll find them rather rough-sounding and lacking in midrange. It's the single driver that's the issue.

There's no separate tweeter/mid driver combo that you find in most proper AV and music speakers, so they're trying to make a large diaphragm speaker do frequencies where it struggles. The bass is limited too because it relies on a fairly high crossover point from the sub to fill in the sort of frequencies we associate with male speaking voice and the deeper end of the female vocal range.

I think you might squeak by with them as surrounds for a while because that's less critical. I wouldn't bother with one as a centre though. Run the front pair in phantom mode - this is where you set no centre speaker so the AV receiver sends centre dialogue to the front stereo pair much in the same way as Hi-Fi works. This will sound better than the centre soundtrack getting mangled by the Logitech.

Thanks, didn't see your edit.

Will the 8OHms sattelites be ok with the 6ohms wharfedales?

Would ATMOS work with 7.1?

FGS, why?

Too late now, but you've got Richer branches in Manchester, Stockport and Whitefield. You could have made an appointment to go have a listen to two or three different models, and then bought and possibly taken advantage of the longer Richer's warranty. Plus, these are local specialist businesses that employ people here and pay UK taxes. [Shakes head in dismay :( ]

Yeah, sounds like a brilliant plan. On you go. Good luck.

If I sound grumpy it's because I think you're taking the **** when you dismiss one amp because of a single comment, and yet fail to see that cobbling on some unsuitable speakers is a way-bigger compromise to the sound quality.

It's not "outrageous or doing a disservice"...... It's whether or not it sounds ****.

1: I only have 2 whardales, the "cobbling on unsuitable speakers" was more experimental to see how it sounds

2: last time I went in richer sounds they didn't seem to be arsed.

3: well the torys are in let's see if they make Amazon pay higher taxes, I didn't vote them in. I'll go off price and speed over boycotting stores due to factors not in my control.

4: if I don't like I can simple choose another amp and return this one.

5: I didn't dismiss the Yamaha due to the harshness described in the review, I just feel the festure set is fuller on the Onkyo. I'm not totally arsed about the EQ.

So I'm not taking the **** at all you are overreacting a bit

I'm with lucid on this one. Shame amazon gets so much business from people who can't be bothered to deal with real human interaction.

Hopefully those that complain about Amazon didn't vote conservatives?

Who says I can't or don't want human interaction?

This forum really gets judgemental and hostile sometimes.

I didn't disregard the Yamaha due to the sonic noise issue. I just had a look at the Onkyo and thought the festure set was much better for the slight increase in price.

Anyway I've got the Onkyo set up, which and easy and blimey the sound blow my Ceol Piccolo out if the water! In my Denon I needed treble at +6 or my wharfedale were horribly muffled, no adjustment needed at all now. Crossover at 80hz, sound is just so much better
