whats the real difference between say these for a laptop -
Intel® Pentium® dual-core processor T2330 (1.60 GHz, 533 MHz FSB, 1 MB L2-cache)
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T5450 (1.66 GHz, 667 MHz FSB, 2 MB L2-cache)
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T5470 (1.60 GHz, 800 MHz FSB, 2 MB L2-cache)

reason i ask is im looking at laptops and funnily enough the cheapest is the one with the Pentium Dual core, but would it be a big difference between the pentium and the T5450? i mean all i see is FSB differences :o
Also has anyone got a T5270 (1.4Ghz Core 2 Duo 800FSB)? im wondering about its performance too. for windows and watching HD video's.
cheers stephen.

Well the top one the T2330 isn't a core 2 based chip its just one of the old yonah cores doubled up.

The second two are both core 2 duos albeit in mobile form.

The T5450 is a merom chip and I am unsure what the T5470 is but IIRC the 800MHZ FSB models replaced the older 667FSB models.

In terms of performance given that they are all laptops you won't really notice the difference between any of them (The pentium M (yohan) was always a good little performer anyway.

ok and what about heat output? i presume the merom would be the "coolest" running chip? while the pentium dual core isnt as good. i know its a hard question to answer but would the pentium dual core run cooler than a P4 2.8 Northwood Mobile processor?

the centrino duo platform includes

NAPA platform
core duo (yonah) 533fsb 1m cache
core duo (yonah) 667fsb 2m cache
core 2 duo (merom) 667sb 2m cache
core 2 duo (merom) 667fsb 4m cache

SANTA ROSA platform
core 2 duo (merom) 800fsb 4m cache
core 2 duo (merom) 800fsb 2m cache
soon to be released penryn cores

NB there are non-cpu related differences between the platforms

They will all run cooler than the mobile P4. I am unsure how they compare to eachother. I can say that I have had identical laptops (Phillips X53 and X55)one with a core duo and one with a core 2 duo and from general use they both got as hot as eachother (subjective test of exhaust fan temperature).

Ghost there is also a 533mhz FSB Core 2 Duo as well. I am using one right now. (Mine is a T5300)

One thought: they all run at different bus speeds. Are lappie buses fixed in BIOS, or auto-detect with different speeds available? I've thought about upgrading the 667 bus CPU in mine, but it's a lot of money if a new chip will be forced to run at 667 as well.

Regarding heat output, I think the Yonah outputs slightly less heat than the Core2's?

I'd say just to choose the one with the fastest/biggest hard-disk and the most memory. All those CPU's will perform nicely. :)
