Hi all,

Hoping for some advice/help/inspiration

I picked up one of these today
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-077-AK&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1490
to replace a nearly dead but loved asus motherboard, for the socket 775, given the age, the choice of motherboards is limited.

I also got a set of these
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-328-CS&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=1516
As the mobo needs DDR3 ram, and my dying motherboard uses DDR2.

So haven't put it all together, it powers up, but I get nothing.

Having put the process (core 2 quad) back into the old mobo, it still posts and shows it working, but nothing on the ASRock one....

Any ideas or inspiration as to what might be the problem?

I've pulled everything but the ram and the power switch.
CPU fan kicks in, board gets warm if you touch the heat sinks on the north/south bridge chips, but no display.

Tried my pci-e graphics card, plus the onboard.

I'm running out of ideas - so any help appreciated

Have you tried doing a CMOS reset, sometimes this helps.

Also is the 4 pin for cpu power connected, often gets missed.

no different. I haven't got any more DDR3 ram to try either, but given the CPU works back in the old motherboard, I guess one of the board or ram is DOA!?

Just checked the BIOS revision just in case, But your safe with all revisions.

I assume you have tried both ram modules. Also check the cpu socket for any bent pins.

yeah tried both ram modules, together and one at a time
I'll take a closer look at the socket, but couldn't see anything on last disconnect.

My fingers are sore from all the fan pushing in :S

It can make the fingers sore, and lost count of cuts from the heatsink fins!

One last thing to try is run the system external to the case.

yeah - been doing that last couple of hours out of desperation and ease to mess around with it...

can't see any bent pins....
I'll stick the cpu on again just for one last try!

Guess I'll have to return it next weekend - Most frustrating!

I can't determine whether it's memory or the mobo - so in that case, you think it's best I return it (I'm not too far from the shop) with the CPU in place so they can give it a test with different ram first and then mobo second?

So CPU/Heatsink back on the original motherboard and its working again, so got to be the new mobo/memory with the problem.

So for posterity, should anyone have the same problem and find this through search.

The memory was either not working, or was not compatible! Replaced with some decent kingston memory (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-094-KS&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=) and it now boots.

The onboard audio doesn't work, but thats a whole different story and one I can't even be bothered to consider. For the effort it may take to resolve, I might as well get a dirt cheap external usb sound card!
