It's not actually that bad. Not sure whether its class or not, not heard that personally, but its no Vectra.

Oh theres no denying its a good car, we had a few here at Ford to drive and test, and its certainly good.

Sorry, just quoting the press!

We recieve all reviews of our vehicles and any group/comparison tests from across Europe, very few rated the Insignia above the Mondeo. In fact, Europe-wide, the Passat is the most favoured in the Motoring Press. Hence why I questioned where you got your info from.

so we could say that the ford rs cosworths were not really ford because cosworth actually made the engine and they were really the only ever good ford ( in my opinion ) ever to be made,
as for the vx220 comment being a lotus made car im sure they only made the chasis, as the engine is the same as the astra and the vxr220 is the same engine as the astra vxr engine,
people do buy vauxhall because they want to and not because there company says so as i know plenty of people with them,
also why would anyone want to buy an older more expensive bmw/merc with high running costs compared to any vauxhall when they are on a budget and want a car with a manufacturers warranty,
i would like to actuall know what people with the anti vauxhall comments actually drive, im sure some would be laughable, and the ones that are not laughable are probably owned by people who more money to spend on a more expensive car from a different class.

Exactly, so its no suprise that the weak link in the VX220 is its engine. The only thing Vauxhall did for it and... they cocked it.

I drive a BMW 530i Sport. It's 7 years old now, but it was 4 when I bought it.

The only people i know with Vauxhalls bought them because they know little about cars, didn't research any alternatives, or simply didn't care.

The other people with them bought them because they were £1000 bangers and/or given to them for free.

Sums most Vauxhalls up for me, for people who do not understand or care about cars.

I've never suggested the Focus is ten times better, I suspect that was others not myself. Frankly the levels of quality in that entire class, Golf included, are far from brilliant, but the Astra is the dunce of the class therefore why bother when the Focus and Golf are a bit better.

The Audi A3 is in that class and the build quality is superb IMHO.

That's probably one of the most accurate things anyone has said in this thread from my point of view, it is exactly the sort of experience I have had too.

My Grandad is a fine example, he has had an unbroken chain of Vauxhalls since before I was born, from the MK1 Cavalier which was really rather good in it's day with a 2 litre Opel engine (did 270 odd thousand miles, believe it or not), rwd and quite good looks compared to it's competition, to a MK2 Cavalier, 2 MK3 Cavaliers, MK1 Vectra, MK3 Astra, 2 MK4 Astras ...and this is where we are today, a silver '04 plate Astra 1.6 auto (which I drive about once every 6 weeks or so, and I really do not like it at all)

He hates Ford because of the cars they used to make in '60-80s when he worked as a mechanic for British Leyland and then British Gas and then for himself as auto-electrician. I struggle to comprehend quite how he judges cars though, for instance he thinks the 1.3 Marina Coupe he had in the '70s was a great car and still maintains they are good today (it was bad even then!).

He thinks anything Japanese is prone to rusting away to nothing and will be plagued with electrical problems, and all he can say about a car with an engine of 2 litres or larger is "that'll use a lot of fuel" ...he has never had a Vauxhall break down on him, never had to do anything outside of regular maintenance other than get a few sensors looked at on his last 3 cars, therefore he believes they are very good cars as reliability is one of his top criteria, he also likes the looks, which is entirely subjective of course.

Now my Grandad is a wonderful person and I'd do anything for him, indeed he largely taught me how to drive 8 years ago, but, his taste in cars is a total enigma to me, he is a Vauxhall fan because they have never let him down basically, his irational dislike of many cars because of what they were like 20-30 years ago baffles me, but I doubt that will ever change and his criteria for judging cars is rather odd to me. Especially as his taste in cars is so full of contradictions. I have tried and tried again to get him to try a modern Ford or a modern Honda even ...but he won't, he just plays it safe and goes with the Vauxhall as he 'knows' them.

Maybe today's Vauxhall's are awesome compared to yesterdays Ford's ...but compare them to today's not the ones from '80s is what I tell him. I can't win though, he's much to set in his ways and opinions :p

I may have wavered on my original point a bit, but I think it demonstrates how totally alien to some of us, some people's car buying criteria and opinions can be, especially when they aren't drawing like comparisons but ones with cars long in the past.

If he could easily afford to buy a brand new Insignia or Astra he very probably would, because he believes that would do him nicely, he wouldn't really consider the options or what he could get for the same amount of money, I can say this in relative certainty. That to me is noth tragic and utterly insane.

I'm indifferent TBH. It doesn't change how I feel about my car.

I hadn't realised that's the category it was in though, you learn something every day I guess.

Yup, sits there with the BMW 1 series, and upcoming Lexus hatch and for some unknown godly reason the Alfa 147

This also applies to Ford/Renault/Volkswagon etc..

Someone buying a Focus ST is not likely to be understand more or care more about cars as someone buying an Astra VXR ?

However, what I have learnt from growing up (and having an Astra GTE 16v) is the majority of Pug GTI/Golf GTi/RS Turbo owners all talked 'big' about their cars and how (theoretically) they'd wipe the floor with me, professing they where very knowledgeable about such things and could rattle of What Car stats verbatim. When you showed them a clean pair of heels, the reaction was often either one of anger with "Your car must be modified"/"I eased off as I didn't want you to crash" or disbelief..

The lesson I learned is that most people that claim to know about cars, and talk big about chassis and absolutes are largely blaggers... :)

Given that he's had 30+ years of trouble free motoring there, i can see his point of view to be honest. People that age just want cars to get them where they want to go reliably, nothing wrong with that.

No, that is true, that's the part I do understand though, the part I find a bit more challenging is his refusal to try anything else, still judging it by long past standards, he is 78 years old now though, so I suppose he just doesn't care anymore, he rarely drives all that far these days.

well a very nice car i must admit if you like bmw's that is but everyones opinion is different and dosent meen they know nothing about cars because they like vauxhalls.

yes the audi is a better build quality but in my opinion not in the same class as the 1.6 cost around 14k unless you know anywhere cheaper, whereas the astra can be had from a forecourt around the corner from me for a miniscule 8.995 so that is 5k difference, and for that kind of money i would expect better build quality, you get what you pay for these days and if you pay peanuts you get monkeys,
i personally do like vauxhalls and have an astra vxr from new, does that mean i know nothing about cars or do my requirements from a car differ from yours, id say so, i did actually want an evo but for the 18k i had to spend i would only get a 53 plate at the time not the 57 plate i have, i did not want a second hand car so does that make me thick with regards to choice of car,

Haha at the idiot who said 205's are overated. I drove one for the first time last week, a battered 150k mile 500 quid 1.9. I now want one so very bad :(

I'll refer you back to my earlier comment that Vauxhalls are bought mainly because they've cheap, and that if you had the dosh, then something like an Audi would most certainly appeal more to most people.

That's just ******* now isn't it? You had a Vauxhall and you care about cars immensely.
