New ASUS HD4870 released!!

The glaciator is pretty good - quiet and quite efficent cooling.

I'm not suprised about the "enhanced power circuitry" - theres quite a high rate of 4870s being returned faulty with burnt out components in the power stage. Which is another reason why I went for the 260GTX 216.

I had one delivered today and I'm going to install it when I build my new system at the weekend. I'll use all the PCI case slots as an exhaust with a 120cm fan if needs be since I've only got a single low rotation 80cm fan at the rear and it probably won't be enough.

So the ones they are shipping at the moment have the new cooler on them? Also is it quiet even before the bios has finished kicking in? I as as I want to put one in my Mac Pro as a secondary card for windows, but it only gets intialised by the windows drivers not OSX so the standard cooler is really loud when in OSX>

Hi there

If the card overclocks better then its great, however the cooler is a fail, the reference cool with fan control is very hard to beat.

Gibbo,

When you say the cooler is a fail what do you mean? Noisey? overheats etc?

Thanks

Steve

Hi there

The reference cooler is damn good once you adjust the fan speeds its very hard to beat and then it has the advantage of exhausting heat from the case. Plus its great someone overclocking who don't mind noise levels as ramp that fan too 100% and no other cooler can really touch it.

Ok, but for somebody who has no option of controlling the fan speed probably 80% of the time and who has a case which can shift enough air how does the Asus rate? Is it quiet through the post cycle etc?

Hi there

Can't comment on its noise levels, never heard one. New ATI drivers are looking to implement fan control within the overdrive tab.

I just preferre the reference cooler its a much better idea to dump all that hot air out of the case than have it increase temperatures within the case.

The Asus will be a good card no doubt, but it could have been better if they had used a reference cooler or something similar in my oppinion.
