Anyone know if ATi are likely to release a new AGP card to replace the X800 series? 55% of the market are still AGP - I can't understand why then don't want to keep producing AGP cards?

Last time I checked ATI had stated they wouldn't be releasing any more AGP cards(certainly not at the high end). Percentage terms of who is using what isn't always the best definition either as of those 55%(assuming the figure is correct) you will have an awful lot who are not 'power' users, there are an loads of people using PCs that are several years old who have no interest in games so will stick with their AGP solutions. If you took a look at the Steam survey there are an large number of people using quite old graphics cards and PCs so this forum is not representative of the majority of users. It is taken/pushed by the graphics card companies that people who are enthusiasts will upgrade to PCI-E so realistically there isn't enough of a margin in most cases for them to continue to produce AGP cards for an ever dwindling market.

Nvidia have released the 7800gs but it doesn't seem to be much better than a 6800ultra if at all so really it is a last gasp option for those below a 6800/X800series card that don't want a full upgrade as yet.

Pitty, I wanted to upgrade my graphics card on my current AGP system now (about £200) while I wait for the new Athlon 64 motherboards to come out. Then I would get a new top of the range card in the new system I'm building. ATI were my first choice, as usual, but it looks like ATI may force me to go to Nvidia. Why is it so difficult for them to still support AGP to some extent? They're losing not only current graphics card sales but a life time of graphics card sales from people like me, since I'll likely stay with Nvidia in future if I like my new Nvidia card.

Teasy you could still go ATI if you prefer by getting an X850XT although you will be missing out on Shader Model 3 but the card will still be about as fast as a 7800gs. You could also change your graphics card to a 6800gs and overclock it and you won't be all that far behind the 7800gs while saving £60ish.

If you really want one of the new ATI cards the X1600 is now on AGP

For less than £100 it's not all that bad a card. A 6800GS is definitely faster, but it's also £50 more

Hmm, how much faster is the X1600 compared to a 9700 Pro 128MB? (I haven't been keeping track of video cards for quite a while).

Come to think of it does anyone have any reviews that show the performance of the newer AGP cards (X850, 7800GS, X1xxx ect) compared to a 9700 Pro?

Not against a 9700pro no. Possibly against a 9800pro as thats a bit newer. I know toms hardware do their massive VGA charts which might have some info on there for you. ALthough I'm unsure if the 9700pro is in there.

A good vaue for money upgrade from the 9700pro would be a 6600gt. They are around £100 now and better than the X1600.

Here i some info i found online from an etailer (dont think i can state due to rules) but may be helpfull.....

Customer Reviews Of Radeon X1600PRO

amazing
quite impressive. runs UT2004 flawlessly on full settings. great value
Upgraded from xtasy Ti4200. Huge difference. Havent tried to OC, will wait a while

Fast card!!!
Able to Play Doom 3 (high res), Nascar (max res), Call of duty 2 (max res)..
Really suprised at the way this thing handles games... Verty impressive for the price!!!

Fantastic for the money
open GL 2.0, 256mb ram, and 12 pipelines for a great price!
Plays BF2, COD2,HL2,and FEAR smooth.

Great!
This card is the way to go if you are looking for a sub-mid range gaming card. It can play most of the current games on high setting. Pair this with an AMD processor and you'll rip apart HL2. Haven't tried to OC this, but not planning to anyways.

well, its only alittle bit more expensive (£50-70)to buy a PCI express main board and a 7800gt... yet the 7800gt is MILES faster that the 7800gs......

the 7800gs is rubbish and a money maker for NVIDA cos they KNOW that people need it, so they are over charging for it since they have no competition (like any good company will always do)

a X850XTPE is about the same speed....the 7800gs is hardly a top end board now is it?

id go for the asus v9999 6800! 6600GT, 6800 and 1600 all about same performance and price, but the asus 6800 have amazing overclocking potential, and thats before you even think about unlocking the vertex shader + other pipelines(if you get lucky anyway)

the x800pro is a great agp card.
i think a lot of people that bought them are kicking themselves now cos only a year later they are being pushed to PCI-e.

I have goto hold off this year before I go fully 64bitted up!

I'll Third the vote for the vanilla 6800 on AGP. At stock speeds it beats a 6600gt more often than not and it really does overclock well. If you are lucky enough to be able to unlock it as well then i suspect that it would beat a 6800gs/gt at stock easily enough.

Sadly though.....i suspect that we probably won't see any more high end AGP cards coming out, even though the x8 bandwidth limit has never been reached on that platform. I think AGP could go up to 7800gtx speeds at least before the limitations of the socket start to show.

I really don't think it would be very sensible for me to buy a new motherboard just for PCI-Express support. Considering as I said I'm going to buy a new system in 5-6 months.

BTW, who said anything about the 7800gs or X850 being a top end board? I said I'm going to upgrade my graphics card now and then when I get my new system I'm be buying a top of the range graphics card.
