So I took my old 7800 out this morning and replaced with a 4850, I didn't bother installing the drivers that came with the card, I just downloaded the latest drivers.

My problem is the colour settings, I'm adjusting the brightness/contrast/gamma to my liking, but it doesn't seem to have an effect in game, I'm trying WoW mainly at the moment, the games so dark I can barly see.

Also when I exit the game, all the settings go back to default, but when I open up the control panel, it switches back to the settings I set.

I think you have to go to the wow settings and go to "video" then "use desktop gamma" then it will probably use the settiings you set in CCC.

I've had this same issue with my last two ATI cards and still haven't found an answer.

Hopefully someone posts a solution :)

Leave the settings alone in ATI CCC, only adjust brightness and contrast on your monitor. Then adjust brightness in under video, for videos.

I've posted on a few forums, even the ATI official forums without any luck.

To try to get to the bottom of things, I did a format and reinstall of windows, just incase some of the nvidia drivers were still hanging about. Unfortunately, no change

1 thing I have noticed though, is that in TF2, when i changed a graphics settings, all of a sudden the 3D colour settings kicked in, it's a partial fix, but not what you want to do everything you fire up the game :(

Yep.

At 1 point I put both desktop and 3D on max gamma, so that if 1 of them worked in a game, i would definately know about it!
But still, no change :(

Edit - Is there any other software I can use to change the gamma/brightness/contrast on my card, because as it stands, I see little point in keeping the catalyst control panel installed.

Is there not settings for this in ATI Tray Tools?. I've never used the CCC. Just the display driver and ATI Tray Tools. I think there's the options for this but not 100% on it.

This is a known problem when switching from NV to ATI.
The NV driver need to be removed completely.

You need to uinstall drivers, run drivercleaner in safemode, reinstall driver, Reinstall game. If nothing of the obove works I'm afraid REFORMAT is your only option.

Drivercleaner: http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=745

BTW: ATI has seperate color contols for 2D and 3D:

Did a reformat last night :(
Only NV drivers I have on at the moment are the chipset.

I have my monitor on full settings since it's very dark, while I can adjust the settings in most games to make it playable, TF2 is the problem, even on full gamma it's quite dark.

I get the same issue. I went from a 8800GTX to a 4870, full driver sweep beforehand etc.

I find that TF2 completely ignores whatever gamma settings I select in both the desktop and full screen 3d drop downs.

My problem is the reverse of yours though. I find TF2 has too much gamma, and i'm having to turn the slider in game all the way to the right to compensate.

I had exactly the same problem with the ATI driver in the 9800pro days lol. I have found that if you force AA through the CCC rather than selecting AA in game that this seems to allow the game to use the CCC gamma settings.

It's all rather wierd, and it's the only thing that I find disappointing along with lack of automatic game profiles compared to the 8800GTX it replaced.

What if you haven't switched from NV to ATI?
