New backplate - memory problem

Hi chaps,

So I installed a new backplate and cooler last night and booted up to find that only the 1st DIMM slot works with random Dr Debugs of 55 (memory not installed). Looking around on google one would suggest that either the backplate is shorting the board or there's too much pressure on the CPU.

This morning I've put it on the bench and loosened the springs - lo and behold it works but what could the issue be ?

Too much pressure on the cpu or the backplate shorting something ? One really strange instruction for the backplate was to remove the insulating tape which to me doesn't make sense - I reluctantly adhered.

What do you guys think ? Leaving the bolts loose adds gets it working but is unstable if I move it around

Cheers

Is there a happy medium where you can tighten it up a bit but not get the issue?

If not, I'd be tempted to try some insulating tape first - it's easier to see if it's shorting rather than trying to balance the pressure on the CPU.

Alternatively, send the cooler back and get another one.

Probably but that defeats the purpose of good cooling. It should be clamped on there firmly :D

Yep, I'm already there... was very reluctant to take this option for all the obvious reasons. I'm being lazy ;)

Will report back on the outcome - Cheers
