Hi

At present I have a Makita drill driver 8344d. 18v nicd.
It's pretty old 7-8 years but works just fine, however it needs a new battery.

So would it be worth holding onto the Makita and buying a new battery for about £40-50 or buying a new Lithium powered drill driver for £50?

The pros and cons I can see would be makita drill is of high quality.

New £50 drill would be lower quality but lithium battery and shiny and new.

any views?
thanks

New battery, a whole new unit and battery for £50 is going to pale in comparison to a decent Makita unit.

I'm in the same situation, (~10yr old Makita), just going to move to a new drill. No point throwing good money after bad.

Used my dad's drill driver/impact driver the other weekend - was on a different level.

yea will probably sell miakita bits on ebay - new one won't be getting much heavy duty use and only used once or twice a week so make sense to get a lithium battery one

While new battery is the cheaper and least wasteful option, I would sell the drill on ebay (minus the battery) and get a new drill. Just moving from ni-cad to li-ion is a big upgrade in my opinion. Being able to get the drill out and start using it, as opposed to getting the drill out and finding it's gone flat and needs a charge before doing anything is very handy. I would spend a little more than £50 and get something better. As someone who had Bosch green li-ion the upgrade to Dewalt XR this year was a big step up in performance and quality. Plus if you want to get an impact driver you can get one and share the batteries, which you can't on the cheaper and more domestic orientated stuff such as the Bosch green.

Well I've ordered from B&Q the dewalt DCK211C2 10.8v set drill driver and impact driver. £80. free next day delivery.

I know it's 10.8v but reviews seem good and it won't get hardly any heavy duty use.

Plenty of batteries on the bay.granted they are `replacement`but have served their purpose for me.i have about 6 makita 12v tools.3 batteries were around £56 last time i bought some iirc :)

There is a good wireless Bosch drill for sale in Screw fix for £89.99
it includes 2 batteries and has a 3 year warranty. Bosch are always decent.

I hope I am not violating any rules, I didn't think ocuk sells drills lol

I recently bought the £100 bosch combi drill from screwfix
Its got a 4ah battery and seems really decent.
Im comparing it to a significantly more expensive drill but for the money seems a bargain

Ok its only got 1 battery, but at 4ah its a monster.
Drill I am used to using with 4ah will go all day of just drilling and screwing normal type stuff
personally I would take 1 big battery over 2 small ones. It just takes a little forethough and you can have the thing fully charged before you start.
I plan to pickup another bosch item that uses the same batteries sooner or later so will have multiples anyway.

Just get a new one from screwfix when they have an offer.
Sell the old drill on ebay without battery.
