New Be Connection below expectation!

Hey guys. This week I got hooked up to Be Unlimited [after a wait of around 10 months!] and I am dissapointed in the connection I have.

Instead of the between 10mb and 15mb I was expecting, I am lucky to get above 6mb! I have to use a little tool called DSL Modem Tool to improve my connection [uses some kind of magic to squeeze more down the line by lowering my SNR].

I am only about 2km from my exchange - as the crow flies - but it seems the line is somewhat rubbish. Before I tweaked my modem my SNR was at around 7db and my Attenuation is approx 45db.

I have been reading around and apparantly disconnecting the ringwire may help improve my connection. I have also heard about an NTE5 faceplate that basically acts a filter for the entry point into the house. Now I do not have an NTE5 box [hence the ringwire].

Could I get BT to swap the old box for an NTE5 and would it provide any significant improvement over disconnecting the ringwire?

To be honest if I can't find a way to get at least 10mb I may just consider a different ISP. I am paying for up to 24mb broadband and I am barely scraping a quarter of that!

When I first got my Be* connection I was getting the exact same problem as you which was getting below par sync speed.

The way I managed to resolve the problem was by fitting a filtered face plate to my master socket. The face plate was called an XTE-2005 and this worked wonders.

My connection went from roughly 9Mb to 15Mb so its definatley worth getting one.

Also you mention if you cant get at least 10Mb then you're going to chnage service providers. Who exactly do you expect to get at least 10 from (apart from cable)?

Also if you can then post your router stats.

I would think the reason for your low speeds is most likely your line quality/actual length, can't see changing providers helping in the speed unless you went cable.

Im on Be, get about 10meg sync, Distance from exchange is 1.21km, actual line length is more like 2.3km. If you say your straight line distance is 2km then the actual length is going to be far greater is most cases, so your speed may me normal for the line length?

just got max, with my filters and router i was syncing at 3300kps with 6db snr. Installed an adsl faceplate (says adsl 1.0 on the front, bought about 4 years ago never fitted) and cat3 phone cable that came with 5861 and i am now syncing at 4800kps with 9db snr. I know its slightly different but i was honestly expecting zero change.

6mb connection sounds normal for 2km (straight line), maybe 3 to 3.5km real line lenght

i'm 1.6km away from my local exchange, maybe 2.2 to 3km real line lenght and always connect at nearly 12mb

sure i can tweak it by lower the SNR to 7db to get higher speed connection but cant be bothered.

moving to different ISP wont help at all. its the lenght of your phone line, nothing you can do :(

sorry mate i know its not what you want to hear :(

I'd take that graph with a truckload of salt for starters.

It might be worth getting an NTE5 installed, but first off you should try with no extension wiring and the modem connected straight to the master socket (the ring wire's irrelevant then) and see what you get.

Cancel whilst you still can. Be are the worst ISP I've ever been with by a long long way. We received a faulty BeBox which they have completely ignored (ie, we're still using it now because no one from BE has or can tell us how to get it replaced).

The line drops every other day. The speeds we are getting are shockingly poor to say it's "up to 24 meg." I'm paying 25 quid a month for a 6 meg connection. I could pay a £10 a month and get the same connection with other companies.

It took them a month to get our line connected. They told me they had refunded my money for the time I'd paid where they failed to connect me. They never did until I went ape at them this week over it.

The customer service really is by far the worst I have ever come accross. I know every disgruntled customer wil say that, but I really do mean that. It's a call centre based in bulgaria with staff who have no idea about ADSL, or even who they are. They won't deviate from their script which is utterly infuriating when you're trying to get a simple answer out of them.

Viewing websites outside of the UK (particulkary the US) can be very painful and slow. Gaming is a nightmare at times: random connection drops happen quite regulary and pings are unstable frequently (connected by cable rather than wireless before anyone points out the flaws of trying to play games over wireless:) ). I honestly have nothing good to say about them.

Cancel whilst you still can before the period where you have to give 3 months notice to leave or pay £50 to leave straight away.

You must be one of the unlucky ones then.

As regards to your random disconnections do these happen when you connect your modem to the test socket because it could be your internal wiring to blame.

As for the pings...they are fare better than what I had when i was with BT. When pinging jolt.co.uk I now get 17ms whereas on Bt they were 35ms and this is constant whatever time of day it is.

As for paying 25 a month for an "UP TO 24Mb" your paying for something thats not a guaranteed service so you cant really compplain about getting 6Mb. Whats your attentuation anyway?

Just out of curiousity, what kind of speeds would i be looking at with this?

Assuming the line is good quality and all.

Being that close would presumably mean a short line (possibly under 20db atttenuation, which would mean about 18Mb or more (on adsl2+) assuming the line isnt too noisy) but as always its impossible to tell without any linestats.

Hope that helps anyway

I did connected my BeBox to the master phone socket in my house but there was very little change in speed, definately not enough for the hassle of rewiring the the ethernet cables for the two upstairs PCs.

I would love to try a faceplate but I do not have a test socket behind the current faceplate. Only the newer NTE5 boxes have this. The one in my house is an older spur or star configuration. I would love to have an NTE5 fitted but wonder how much it would cost since I am told you aren't allowed to touch the wiring in the socket.

With a 24mb connection I think hoping for 10mb isn't out of the question, I am not inordinately far away from my exchange even taking in to account line length. If I were to change ISPs I would be looking for an ISP that offers a smaller bandwidth and cost me less.

Like I said, why pay 20 quid a month for 24mb when I am only getting something BT, Sky, Talk Talk or others could provide me for less.
