I finally bought a new bed today. \°/ It gets delivered in 3 weeks. Been meaning to replace my really old bed for ages. I bought this in a double:

Apparently very sturdy and most importantly for me, the headboard is well cushioned. I tried a few others where the headboards looked good but as soon as my head touched them I could feel the wood underneath the fabric.

I preferred a solid surface under the mattress instead of slats but the only one I found in my price range was no good. Reviewers said mould grew on it (they showed photos) from lack of ventilation or cheap materials. Anyway, I won't be jumping on the bed so hopefully the wooden slats won't break and it has a 5 year guarantee.

I had in mind to get a firm 1000 pocket mattress. I tried one and it was nice. Had a 5 year guarantee. It could also be flipped and has different materials either side for summer and winter. In the end I bought a medium firm memory foam with 800 pockets but with an 8 year guarantee. It seemed a bit more comfy and apparently medium is better for side sleepers which I am. Does anyone know if the different materials for the flippable mattresses make.much difference or is it a gimmick?

Here's the mattress I bought:

Total for frame and mattress was £800 including disposal of old mattress which I think is pretty good. I can take the old frame to the dump in my car as it's a divan that splits in half.

What do you guys reckon, all seem ok? I didn't want to spend thousands on a new bed and I think my purchase should be good for a few years?

Anyone had experience of assembling an Ottoman bed? I'm thinking of doing it with a friend but he said there's always a chance of breaking something or cross threading a screw. Alternatively it's £70 to have a professional assemble it for me. What do you think, is it hassle and better to get someone to do it?

Your friend sounds like he didn't want to be bothered with helping you lol. It's a piece of cake to assemble. At 70 quid I'd be tempted myself lol.

I'd definitely assemble myself, you can cross thread a screw but you have to be pretty ham fisted to do so or really cheap screws. You'll be fine.

They're easy to assemble. Can sometimes be a bit of a pain depending on design to do it yourself, but I managed no problem.

As for crossthreading screws, you could use that excuse for literally anything with a screw.

Thanks chaps, I'll have a go at assembling it.

Hah, well, he was just trying to advise me but he always does that, lol. He said he's very happy to help me put it together.

Had an absolutely terrible experience with Bensons last year. Very long story but essentially ordered a bed, the delivery was delayed several times, when it did turn up it was damaged. Replacement arranged, delayed several times, delivered damaged, second replacement delayed several times, damaged by the company leaving it outside the warehouse in the rain (apparently), was then told it was discontinued. Chose a different design as a replacement (also had to get matching furniture replaced as it no longer matched the new bed). This was also delayed a couple of times until it was eventually all delivered in a satisfactory condition. It took almost a year. Every time a delivery was delayed they didn't tell us in advance, so someone was waiting in all day for a bed that never arrived. I think 6 or 7 times someone had to wait in the house. I could go into a lot more detail but basically it was the worst customer service experience of my life by some distance. So yeah, good luck.

Anyway because of the above I have had the misfortune to have to put together and take apart Benson's ottomans several times over the last year. It is definitely do-able by yourself, only awkward bit is actually putting the ottoman bit together - lifting the platform that the bed sits on onto the rails which lift up can be a bit tricky to line up the screw holes when you are doing it by yourself but it is manageable.

Sorry you had to go through all those replacements and delays, that's shocking. Well mine is scheduled for delivery on 10th Oct so we'll see if it arrives or not! I'll keep in mind what you mentioned about the platform but I'll have a friend here to help me.

My bed and mattress got delivered yesterday. Mattress is awesome, best night's sleep I've had in a while! It's part memory foam and part pocket sprung in medium firm. I didn't think I'd like memory foam as it has a slight sort of sinking feeling under my feet, but it's so comfortable and not a problem.

Bed frame looks great with nice grey fabric and the headboard is a really nice large size and well cushioned. My bedside table is a few inches lower to me now as I'm higher up on this bed and mattress than my previous really old bed. There is one issue with it though. The front right of the black steel ottoman frame with wooden struts (which lifts up for access to storage) seems to be slightly warped as it doesn't sit flush and so there's some up and down play creating knocking. Bensons did a great job today and ordered a whole new steel frame for me which should be delivered in 7 to 10 days. The bed has a 5 year guarantee so no worries.

I got a new bed a few days ago. Got a divan as I like the height and storage on them. They also have a solid base for the mattress. Got the same sort of mattress too, pocket sprung with memory foam. Came with a nice comfy headboard too. £950 all in. Fair whack but you cant put a price on a good nights kip

Nice. I just replaced a four drawer divan with this ottoman. Remember to rotate your mattress each week for about 12 weeks. At least, that's what I'm meant to do with mine.

always amazed they still make furniture a robot vacuum can't go under, must lose so much business

My old sofa was slightly too low for a robot. So I bought new feet and raised it an inch.

Actually makes a lot of difference. The cleaner obviously doesn't clean behind it. But the robot gets everything. No longer will I move the sofa and go 'eww'

I agree with your point!

Its either no gap.. Or robot vacuum gap.

didn't really understand why you replaced the base £300! - just migrating to ottoman ?- it's that much more flexible ? - money which could have gone into the mattress.

Have just wooden slatted base in two parts/sides - but will just replace mattress, could get some of those vacuum pack bags to use underbed space,
mattress at ~60kg is a pita to turn - one day it will crash onto beside cabinets.

conventional vacuum would go underneath using pivotting head - carpet probably an ideal environment for bed bugs so perhaps it should be done more regularly.

Robot vac under the bed is the in thing - If yours doesn't go under you are out of the circle -Pleb. :)

Is this the latest sign of a high revenue earner along with the Gucci belt, corner sofa and now furniture a robot vac can go under?

In old days it was quite easy to raise the bed -we just went to a bomb site and grabbed 4 bricks -one for each corner. :)

Are you referring to me? My old bed was really old and well past it, a divan with four drawers. An ottoman gives me more space which I need in my small flat. The mattress I bought is a hybrid memory foam and pocket springs, is extremely comfortable and comes with an 8 year guarantee. I'm sleeping really well on it and it only cost £400. You don't need to spend over three times as much.
