I'm looking to get into cycling to get a bit fitter and to commute to work, plus in the long term get on the roads with some friends who are keener than me at the moment at the weekends. I've got £800 worth of cycle to work vouchers and want to get a bike and basic accessories for that amount. I'd like something that I can take off road a bit (but I won't be doing crazy rock trails etc). I've been looking at cyclo-cross /adventure Road bikes - do people recommend these? They seem like they'd handle gravel paths/well used bridleways etc but still light enough on the road and be a bit more relaxed to ride than an all out Road bike.

Any particular models that people recommend. I've spotted the pinnacle arkrose 2 or Genesis Croc de fer 10 that just about get in my budget and give me hydraulic brakes (are they worth it?). It looks like I can definitely get carbon forks in this range but is there anything else to consider?

Cheers Guys. My vouchers won't come through for a few weeks, but the money is already burning a hole! I like the look of the cannondale, looking around I can't believe how much prices varies, seems Evans aren't the cheapest!

Also spotted this:

A little cheaper but ticks most of the boxes, leaves me more for other bits, need to include mud guards, helmet, pedal, maybe shoes etc as well, ideally in within the £800.
