Only had the GSXR1000 for a year but never had a bike I've ridden less - only 1500 miles in 12 months! Can't really put my finger on it, just a combination of getting older / more sensible and the crappy road conditions (both traffic and pot holes). We have some awesome roads around here but I dont seem to be enjoying them. Did a couple of track days on the Gixxer and it was brilliant, but even then was rarely out of third gear, and as much as I'd like to do more of them, being 100 miles away from a track is a right pain.

So, I've finally decided to see what all the fuss is about the GS. My mates had them for the past 7 years and we've done tours together where I've looked enviously at his comfy steed on all road conditions, but especially the small, narrow bumpy stuff. Already got a Euro trip booked for August and taking my 13 year old son with me, so it will definitely be better for that, and also got the TT booked for next year.

Decided to go brand new, as really wanted the triple black colour scheme and newer twin cam engine, which was hard to track down 2nd hand, and its a bike I plan to keep for a few years so nice to know its been run in properly etc. Opted for ABS, heated grips and remote oil sensor, and full 3 piece luggage, but passed on the electronic suspension, which isn't rebuildable and has very mixed reports from the various GS forums, and didn't bother with Traction control. It comes with the black wire spoken wheels which look great :)

So, should be picking it up by the end of the month hopefully.

hhmm, just had a call from the dealer to say they cant get a triple black until the end of July :( That means I'd struggle for time to run it in and get it serviced before the eurotrip.

They are offerring me a Rallye at a discount, which is a slightly higher spec for only a couple of hundred more. Not sure if I love or hate the colourscheme though! Genuine dilemma :/

Yeah, I was thinking that. You can get black beak covers that fit on the end - would just finish it off.

Think I'm going to go for it, but might just pop over to the dealers first. Apparently looks much more striking in the flesh

Arranged to go and look at one tomorrow. I'm definitely coming round to the colour scheme the more pics I see. Looks better in real pics than the promo ones, especially with luggage attached. Not as mean looking, but more Enduro!

It's certainly the sensible choice, as the spec is actually really high - it has everything on it including electronic adjustable suspension and traction control, neither of which I'm bothered about, but will help with resale.

I wouldn't mind waiting normally, but it would leave me about 10 days to run the bike in and get the first service done before the Euro trip, and that's assuming the date doesn't slip.

Also, my mate has the triple black so we might look a bit 'chips' on the same bikes! (reference for the older readers!)

Yep, picked it up on Wednesday.

Absolutely love it! Definitely made the right choice as I've had more fun in the last few days on this than the past year on the GSXR (apart from track days)

Still running it in so keeping the revs low(ish) so not been able to experience the full power yet but the torque is addictive. More impressive is the handling and ride quality. I've never ridden a bike where the ride is so refined - nothing our crappy rods can throw at it upsets it, and it gives you so much condidence on poor road surfaces.

Just ordered some engine bars, but need to go steady as the aftermarket catalogues for these thing are never ending!

Just waiting for the Wunderlich Rallye edition bars to arrive now, hopefully before the inevitable first drop!

Any updates? How did you get on with it on your planned trip? Bike looks brilliant.

Got back last week. Bike and trip were awesome. I usually get back from these trips wishing the bike was either a bit more comfy (Blackbird) or a bit more powerful (Versys) but this bike really does just do everything.

Loaded 2 up with tent and pannier, select the right mode on the ESA and it was rock solid stable, happy to pull from 2k in any gear, just bags and bags of torque. Cruises all day long at 80-90mph (would be happier faster too but had my lad on the back) and in comfort mode it just glided all the way to France and back, whilst selecting sport made it more entertaining on the D roads :)

Also found some of the other kit useful too. The Sena comms kit was brilliant. Meant jake could listen to his iPod on the long motorway bits, then just tap the side of the helmet to have a chat (auto pauses the music) - really good for when we were bumbling around Normandy discussing the sights.

Found it very useful having charging sockets on the bike for the phones, especially as we were camping, and the Ortleib 109 litre bag made packing up the bike really simple - just load tent, mats, sleeping bags and chairs in one massive waterproof bag.

Was also trying a new helmet, Schuberth C3 fl up. Wanted one of these for ages but was a bit disappointed. It was baking hot, 34 degrees, and the visor wouldn't stay up :( also, whilst its a bit quieter than my old Shoei XR1000, it doesn't feel as well made and has a few annoying points that rub on the chin and forehead.

Here's a few pics of the trip, and you can see the red engine bars which finish I off nicely

Jon, I've not got room for 2 bikes, but am genuinely happy with this one now :) in sport mode it's almost like a supermoto....planning to take it on a track by the end of the year :)
