Have to tell someone as friends and family have zero interest in photographic gadgets!

Thanks to an unexpected tax rebate I've managed to buy a few bits for my 40D. Until now have only had a f1.8 50, which although great for sharpness and low light is a bit restrictive in terms of range, I can never seem to get far enough away from my son to capture him properly.

So I've gone cheap and purchased a 18-55 IS (£85 new from Amazon at the mo), which after reading a bucket load of reviews seems, surprisingly, to be one of the better short zoom performers until you start shelling out serious money.

Have also splurged on a 430EX II and cheapo diffuser which I can't wait to try out and a pack of the new 2500mAh Eneloop XX batteries with a ninja BL-700 charger.....oh and I got a Giotto Rocket too, woo!

Should probably have done things the other way around and spent more on the lens and less on the flash, but never mind :)

Now thinking about what glass I need to save up for. Areas I'm interested in but don't currently have covered are macro and moon shots. I'm thinking of the Canon EF 100 f2.8 USM Macro and Canon EF 70-300 f4-5.6 IS USM. Not sure if I'd also need an extender for the moon shots?

Cant really go wrong with 18 - 55 kit lens. Cheap and cheerful although a lot of people will say should have got the tamron 17 - 50 f2.8 I never had any complaints with the kit lens on my 450D. Yes theres better out there but the price can make it appealing if you dont already have one.

I can vouch for the 100 f2.8. fantastic lens and I used it tonight for a shot although not specifically in the proper 'macro' sense. Very nice lens, sharp but you'll have to get used to the narrow DoF depending on what you want to take photos of.

The 70 - 300 is a good lens especially on a crop body as you'll get up to 420 instead of the 300 on FF. With mine I've found that going over 200 mm things do begin to get a little bit softer but recently upgraded to the 70 - 200 F2.8 and the difference between the two lenses are phenomenal but then again so are the price tags. Also you wont be able to get an extender for the 70 - 300 as its only the L lenses (the white ones) that are compatible.
