Looking at getting a new mobo/CPU/RAM on a budget. I'm looking at this lot;

I'm hoping to keep my current 500W PSU but failing that I be looking at a 600W+ PSU.

Will also follow this up with a new gfx card for around the £80-£100 price point. Any thoughts?

Looks good.
If you want to save some money, go AMD.

gfx card wise, Id go HD4870 / 90 for that price range :)

I'm pretty set on Intel. I know it's more costly but I've been more happy with Intel stuff in the past. I'm also pretty set on a Gigabyte mobo for the same reason ....... and the Geil RAM. Always been happy with these manufacturers.

Been torn between a 48** card & one of the new 57** cards in the £80-£100 price range. The 57** is winning out so far as it's obviously newer, DX11 & is supposed to be more efficient.

HD5750 is the best you'll get for £100 and its in a word [LIFTED].
You could get a HD4890 for £100 and that outperforms a HD5770 by a long margin, heck an HD4870 is a good deal better than a HD5770 based on the benchmarks Ive seen.
DX11 wont become mainstream for a while yet imo, so Id stick with the HD48 series, and see what happens further down the line :)
 
So an older 48** would be a better optionat this time? I did check out some benchmarks & noticed that some of the 4870/4890's outperformed the newer 57** cards. I suppose either would blow my current 1950 out of the water so it doesn't matter to me to much which one I end up with.

It's a tough one isn't it. I guess if you forget about the benchmark tests (the card types are not exactly poles apart anyway) then it's a no brainer. The 57** card in the £100 region is probably the one to go for. But for the same price you could get an expetionally good 48** card that will still do the business in a decent system for a good while yet. I think I might just wait a while & see how the prices change. When the 57** cards come down then I'll go for it. I'll hang in with the 1950 until then ;)
 
What you need to remember, and I urge you to pay attention to this, is that although the HD5750 and HD5770 can use DirectX11, do not fall under the illusion that they will perform amazingly well on it - these are the low-end of the first generation of DX11 cards, they are by no means perfect and it would probably be more beneficial to either up the budget to grab two HD5770s or a single HD5850 for good DX11 performance.

The 5770 is reeling the 4870 in terms of performance as the drivers are better optimizing the card but they're a long way off the 4890 performance unless they get overclocked. For out-and-out performance it's currently better to get yourself a HD4890 if you can get one at a good price (and by good price I generally mean cheaper than a HD5770, so around £120 or less), otherwise I would illogically move to the newer card, even though it does not perform as well, due to the lot less power consumption and room for another card to Crossfire once DX11 becomes more mainstream.

Like I said I may just stick with my trusy old X1950, upgrade the other main components & see how the gfx card market plays out over the next few months.


EDIT: Just looking at the gfx cards on OcUK & it appears they are not stocking 4890's. 4870 appears to be the highest ......... & they only have 1 of these ..... and it's out of stock! Clearly it looks as if OcUK are phasing out the 4*** cards. Next card up in the list is the 5450! I guess if I did want a 48** card I'd have to shop ...... ellswhere!!
