Evening all,

I just got the 8900 on Orange with the 'BlackBerry Talk' addon. I was just wondering, should I be able to access web pages/GPS/email on the go? It refuses to let me connect to anything other than WiFi.

I'm not tech savvy when it comes to phones, but I was under the impression that, although the 8900 is not 3g, I could still use edge or gprs (not sure if that's right??) to browse the internet and use maps.

Am I missing something? Any help would be greatly appreciated. :)

Well i dont know if thats Oranges BIS data plan or what...but without a specific BB data plan you wont be able to use the net via your phone.

Give them a ring and find out why it isnt working, if you do indeed have a BIS plan on your account. If so it might take a bit to get it up and running.

I found out what was wrong - I was supposed to go to blackberry.orange.co.uk and activate it. Frigging BlackBerry says it's already registered to another carrier, though. Joy.

it takes a while from Orange adding the BIS onto your account and it working on their systems.

Also try this as it helped me sort mine out:

Go to Tools, then click on advanced options and go to Host Routing Table, hit the options and click Register Now.

Should then be able to register it on the Orange blackberry site, may take a little while.

On the subject of the 8900 which I am very interested in, is there a big disadvantage with the 8900 not having 3G? Since its a device which really caters for internet and email, you would think that 3G would have been worth implementing?

Cheers,

Cheers,

Its not too bad on say O2 as they support EDGE which the 8900 also supports so would be slightly faster than GPRS. Ive heard that Orange also support EDGE as well but i cant be too certain.

I have the 8900 on Tmobile but am sending it back as its just too slow on GPRS...saying that its not super slow...just slower than what im used to with my Bold, which does 3G. But the device itself is very nice, its a lot smaller, lighter and thinner than the Bold...and the keyboard is just as good if not better than the Bold.

So if your not going to be doing a lot of internet browsing etc then the 8900 would be a good choice. Email wise, it doesnt really make a difference...i was getting my emails virtually at the same time i was getting them on my Bold.

Or you could just hold out for a bit and wait for the 3G version of the curve but dont know when that will be out...probably end of yr or early next yr.

I have it on o2 and the mobile internet is perfectly usable to me, the GPRS and wi-fi connections are both fine. It may not be as fast as the Bold but I really can't complain. It's probably my favourite phone.

I am with O2 and need an upgrade and I really need something for regular Internet browsing and especially for email hence why I was looking for the Blackberry. I was keen on the storm but O2 don't do it.

Can I ask you, RandomTom, what sort of deal you got with O2? This unlimited BB bolton thingy has me puzzled with regards to a 200mb quota which I find rather small or am I being nieve?

I tried this, and it just instantly says 'message sent', almost like an error message. Should i be connected to wifi when I do this?

Ive just bought one of these off the bay for £199.95! The seller looks quite respectable and apparently its in as new condition etc. but we'll see next week. To use the Internet and stuff do you need to be subscribed to the Blackberry service? I think ill be mainly using it with WiFi so Im guessing you dont need it for that but what other things are limited?

Thanks.

Without a Blackberry plan you wont be able to use push email, not sure about internet browsing as you will need a data plan whether or not it needs to be a Blackberry one is up to your provider. Also you wont be able to use BB messenger without a blackberry plan.
