Hi i had to give my son a shot of my Gigabyte GA-MA785GMT-UD2H board as a stop gap till he could save up for a new board for his new cpu (965be).

Now does he keep this board or go for a new one he is looking to o\c this and its used for gaming (eve, star wars old republic, bf3) ?

Okay after thinking for a bit i am looking for a board for my son to support a 965be that he will be overclocking and running a 6870 doesn't matter the size mATX or ATX he wont be going sli.

So any help

Thanks

I would go for this board:

It's the cheapest AM3 (and AM3+ board in fact) on OCuk. I have some experience in overclocking on 630a chipsets, and generally you can get good results out of them, especially with unlocked multiplier processors. A 965BE should run as fast as a 980BE on that board easily, probably without a voltage bump as well. That board may also support Piledriver chips when they come out.

I'm surprised such a board is so cheap, it has the classic Gigabyte VRMs which I find to be of high quality. And lastly, don't forget to press CTRL-F1 to access advanced BIOS options, in case you can't find the overclocking settings.

That Gigabyte board supports upto 95W CPU's the 965BE is a 125W CPU (there was a 140W version also?).

You are right, this board seems to be the cheapest option instead:

or this for full ATX at £60:

Nearly £20 more. I think OCuk should state clearly on the product page that the motherboard does not support 125 or 140W CPUs.

To be honest unless you need the board back for something else I'd stick with that as most of what you're looking at in your budget won't be much if any of an upgrade.....

Budget is around £80 mark and he would have liked sata 3 and could not see the point in keeping that board as I would need to order a new one for myself
