I know there's a load of these threads already, but I can't find a book I'd like to read next, so I am looking for some recommendations.

I've just finished 'American Psycho', which was a really well written book and I really enjoyed it; probably the best book I've ever read.

I like crime, horror, thriller and anything gory, but I am open to any other suggestions.

I very nearly picked up a copy of 'Child 44' by Tom Rob Smith, as it is highly rated, but It's not usually something I'd choose. Has anyone read this book, if so what did you think of it?

Thanks in advance.

It's pretty far away from the genres you listed but I'm reading 'Bird Lives!' at the moment. It's the biography of Charlie Parker, whom was a hugely influential saxophonist from the thirties and forties (if you didn't know :p). Even if you're not a fan of jazz or Bird himself, it's a really interesting read in it's own right and has been written very very well.

Recently finished A Scanner Darkly (Philip K Dick) and thought that was rather good. Odd ending and I've not seen the film yet so don't know if that has the odd ending too.

Just started Homicide: A year on the killing streets (David Simon of The Wire). Really well written!

Ended up buying 'Child 44' the other day. But have added all these suggestions to my list of books to read :)

Nearly half way through now, and it's really very good. Really enjoying it.

don't know if this applies but any book by john Connolly ( some brilliant characters - Charlie Parker, angel etc.)
or early Michael Slade books - Headhunter, cut throat, zombie and a few others!
i agree about the Dexter books- poorly written compared to the series ,strange as it's usually the other way round?
I just didn't "like" the Dexter character in the book, he comes across as a smarmy, egocentric git! and a lot of the text seems to dawdle or repeat itself.

You could try the first 4-5 Patricia Cornwell novels forget the ones after as they are quite frankly rubbish. But the first lot are very good. Bet you can pick them up for nothing.
