Magnalite are good but to get bright light you do need a large battery holder
Channel 5's The Gadget Show liked the Gladius Night Ops but it was quite expensive check it out ,it may have to go on your wish list
I've got a million million candle power torch. Mate its so powerful its like a massive spectre of light shining into the night sky. Im told shining it at planes would be immediatly visible at anything up to 20 thousand feet.
Depending on your budget. Made from a single piece of milled aluminium with one of the brightest LEDs on the market. I've got on of these and they are gorgeous.
Also there is a magnet on the lanyard which you push into the lanyard hole (at the end of the torch) to turn it on.
Can't go wrong with the Surefire G2. Can be had for about £30. Produces about the same amount of light as the 3 D cell Maglite for about half the size.

I have a Gladius on order at the moment - I will reply in here when I get it (should be a few days yet...) mind you that SureFire G2 looks very good, shame it is not an LED torch Photon have just started to take pre-orders on their new "Proton" mini-torch which looks great, their other products are really good too
