Hi All,

Looking for a new Motherboard, Processor and RAM combo with a budget of around £230 for a family member. It will be replacing an old Core 2 Duo E6600 with 4 GB of RAM.

So far I have come up with the following:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-443-IN
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-400-GI
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-124-KS

Does anyone see anything wrong with the above selection? Something else that may be better? Really cant go over £230 ish otherwise would have gone for a K edition with better mobo etc for OC but figured this should be a good step up from his previous rig.

Thanks :D

Even the i3 would be a serious step up (benchmark comparison)

Having a good entry level Z77 means he could upgrade to an i5K later and OC, even if it was a 2nd hand 2500K for example (K CPUs have a better IGP too). The Z77 mobo of course has USB3 and Sata3, this one also has the lucidMVP software to make clever use of the IGP in the CPU.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i3-3220 3.30GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - Retail £92.99
1 x Gigabyte Z77-D3H Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £83.99
1 x GeIL EVO Leggera 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (GEL38GB1600C9DC) £44.99
Total : £221.96 (includes shipping : FREE).

Gaming at moderate settings, he has an old card of mine (GTX 470) which is bottleknecked badly by the core 2 (OC'd to 3GHz)

It was ok with my even older previous card (GTX 280) and could run the games he likes at reasonable settings but really struggles with the 470.

We appreciate that its never going to be the best with this budget, but £230 is the limit, saying that the i5 Quad above with 8GB RAM etc should be a big step forward from his old rig.

This sounds like a good plan and makes total sense, thanks for your post.

The only reason we swayed away from this idea initially is that he wont be buying anything else for his PC over the next couple of years at least, so we figured we would try and get the best pormance out of the box at this price point.

Thanks again :D

The i5 3470 will still be best performance wise, no point going with Z77 if he isn't going to upgrade anytime soon
