Hi OCUK,

I posted for advice on TH forums too but wanted more opinions before jumping in as I only got 1 reply. I think I sit too close for a 27" monitor and do like to keep my fps high for the refresh rates as I mostly play online games and single player games on occasion. The PC will be mainly used for gaming and streaming.

Approximate Purchase Date: 1-2 months

Are you buying a monitor: Undecided. Considering 1440p 144hz but may stick with a 24" asus vg248qe that I already have at least at first.

Parts Preferences: Nvidia GPU

Overclocking: I'm a casual overclocker. I won't be pushing my CPU to its limits or breaking any boundaries but will likely OC it to a nice degree like I have with my i5 4690k.

SLI or Crossfire: No

Your Monitor Resolution: A quality 1080p/1440p monitor with high refresh rates / response time etc

Additional Comments: PC aesthetics aren't important to me. Suitable tower for room, airflow and quiet as possible fans with good cooling for a moderate OC are my priorities. I can salvage my soundcard and a 500gb ssd from my old system. Also please note how likely new hardware is to be released over the next 2-6 months as I could potentially hold out a little longer if it would save some money or get me even more performance for the same cost.

You'll want to remove those competitor links.

to give you some idea. You can easily increase the RAM to 32 GB.

A decent monitor and GPU should cost around £1000 together. Look at 3440 x 1440 monitors and the RTX 2070S or the Radeon 5700 XT. Keep your current monitor as a secondary one.

Thanks for the comment. How does OC'ing Ryzen compare to intels like my i5 4690? Is it the same concepts and fairly simple? I'm not super experienced in OC and have never owned AMD. I will look into 1440p 144hz monitors but not too interested in low refresh 4k gaming and as I said I sit too close at all times so a big monitor isn't something I'm looking at atm.

keeping it cheap and reusing your monitor ! although you'd need a basic second monitor for streaming !

Thanks a lot. I am tempted to build for 1440p but purchase a monitor a little later. The 3700x will outlast the 9700k in 1440p and perform a little worse in single core scenarios? Also all I've heard my friends with AMD gpus complain a lot in the past so that's a little offputting and was thinking about the 2070s or 2080s mainly.
 
Been a little busy so haven't had time to get back to this for a few days. There's a few factors I wanted to add to your suggestions.

I think I'm set on a nvidia card at this point (always hear about AMD driver support being slow to release) so a 2070super is the most likely considering the price to performance ratios and the fact 2080super still has 8gb vram. I am more and more sold on 1440p 144hz (but still unsure) and the 3700x but I am for more inexperienced with the type of overclocking being done on the 3700x from what I've read, whereas feel confident on intel cpus in that regard but sure with the help of guides I could work it out eventually.

When I stream I want that to limit gameplay as little as possible and also some future proofing might be nice but will AMD and Intel sockets change on the boards next year? Is it worth the mobo being a higher quality for future upgrades or will I likely need a new mobo by then? The motherboard must be good for some casual OC'ing and I did want to add more SSD's maybe a 2gb 660p or something but I heard about AMD boards cutting m.2 performance? So maybe a 2.5" SSD is the way to go unless I spend more on an x570 board that supports full speeds? Am I right in saying that?

I have no monitor in there yet but was hoping you guys could throw in some suggestions based on 1440p 144/165hz, 1ms response time preferable (I play a lot of fast paced games), GSync and after that colours etc. I've been using an Asus VG259Q for years during competitive CSGO but if I can get equal performance plus better colours that'd be great if I have the adequate performance.

CPU Cooler - Quiet / Performance. Maybe not an efficient purchase though?

RAM - 16gb/32gb? Is it good enough. I heard about 3200/3600mhz being necessary with the new Ryzens but I don't know a lot about that side of overclocking. Should I be spending less on 3000mhz RAM and OC'ing it for example?

SSD - 2TB 660p is out of stock. Alternatives? Want at least two SSD's in this build either both m.2 or one 2.5"

GPU - 2070s vs 2080s. I know @ 1440p the 2080s has some better performance but I'm not sure the extra cost is worth it considering the lack of vram too it doesn't seem very future proof for the money. 2070s got enough power for 1440p@144hz?

Mobo - Upgraded to a x570 board. Has more m.2 slots and pcie 4 for the higher m.2 speeds? Is that right? Is it even worth it?

Case - Meshify C looks nice and has good reviews. Liked the Phanteks Enthoo Pro Glass too both seem very legit cases. I'm looking for cool and quiet. How does the Kolink Castle previously recommended compare?

PSU - Used the first suggested PSU on this thread due to the Corsair RM being out of stock. 650w vs 750w? Quiet?

Monitor - Need suggestions. 1440p 144/165hz, GSync, 1ms response? Do monitors with TN fast pace gaming benefits but with IPS angles / colour quality exist? Should I just save money and stick with my Asus VG259Q @ 1080p 144hz for now and look to invest later; especially considering I may be streaming a decent amount, impacting my performance.

I have many questions I know but I tend to stick with my PC for around 5 years or more, only upgrading when necessary so I want to get it all right. :)

You don't have to spend that much on a cooler if you don't want. Something like a Scythe Mugen 5 Rev.B for £43 would do fine.

I would say that 16GB Ram is fine for most people. There are some games that can use a lot of Ram though i.e Cities Skylines with lots of tiles/mods and a large pop City. Also Ram is pretty cheap at the minute. Not usually much difference in price between 3000 and 3200.

Sabrent Rocket as an alternative NVMe SSD. Not sold on here though. I would just stick with a single 2TB if it was me, unless you need more than that ?

A 2070 Super will run 1440p/144Hz. You won't be hitting 144fps though. I would say between 60fps - 100fps depending on the game as a rough estimate. Also dropping a few settings can improve framerates if need be i.e High/V.High instead of Ultra.

Unless for some reason you need those two M.2 Slots I would go with an MSI B450 Tomahawk.

The Meshify C or Enthoo Pro Glass are both good choices. They should both have better airflow than the Kolink. The build quality is probably a bit better as well, although to be fair the Kolink is half the price so that can be expected.

Not a fan of that psu for the price. A Bitfenix Whisper 650W is cheaper if you don't mind having an ugly 24 pin cable. You also have the SuperFlower Leadex III 650W and Corsair RM 650W for the same price (£89.99).

Up to you about the Monitor. You can stream on a 1440p though and just downscale.
