I'm not really a hardware enthusiast, I won't upgrade my cpu or motherboard for the next 5 years. In which case in the long term a quad core seems like the best option. Computer will be used for general use, while dabbling in some video/photo editing. Also I want to be able to play most games in the next year 1920x1200 on high settings.

Was wondering if anyone could see where I could shave some money off - for basically same performance.

* is the creative xtrememusic worth £20 more than the xtreme audio? I listen to music a lot through these 2.1 speakers http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=SP-022-LG

*is the corsair 650w overkill? I may in the future add another hard drive, or possibly change the graphics card, so i will need some leeway. But is this even above and beyond that? Any cheaper/solid PSU's that will also allow me to do this?

* Will all that stuff fit in the antec nine hundered case?

* Keeping the budget around where it is, are there 22" monitors of better quality that could be considered? Or is it really worth having the extra screen estate on the a 24" and is this monitor as good picture as those? I'm using a 19" samsung non widescreen at the moment.

The spec looks good although you will definately need to upgrade GFX once or twice in the next 5 years if you want to play games at 1920x1200.

A decent high wattage PSU is always a good idea since it will last you a long time although a 520W will power all those with ease.

Antec 900 will fit all those no problem.

I'd stick with the extreme music.

There's a huge thread about that value OCUK 24" monitor, you should have a look at that.

*EDIT* for got to mention you can save a lot of money by not going for the overclocked bundle and just get Q6600, motherboard, RAM, cooler and thermal material seperately. Most Q6600 G0 will do 3.3Ghz anyway unless you are very unlucky. You have the flexibility to choosing your own mobo and RAM as well.

+1, and also, get 2X2GB getting 2X1gb is silly.

so get the bundle stuff seperately, and nice 6400 ram (2X2gb) and you would be good

They will BUT owners complain that it easily attracts dust :(

For longevity, get 4GB as advised but you'll also need a 64-bit OS to take full advantage.

EDIT:
  • Asus P5K Intel P35 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard £62.99
  • Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler (Socket LGA775) £14.99
  • G.Skill 4GB DDR2 PK PC2-6400C4 (2x2GB) CAS4 Dual Channel Kit (F2-6400CL4D-4GBPK) £63.99
  • Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "Energy Efficient SLACR 95W Edition" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - OEM £123.99
  • Sub Total : £265.96
