Hi all,

Not posted on here in a long time! I built my current PC from recommendations on here and it’s finally died - looked at my post history and realised I built it in 2008 which is scary!!!

I’m looking to build another that will last a fairly long time (maybe not 12 years this time but you never know). Completely out of touch so I’ve been doing some reading! To be used for “general” things, not a gaming pc but wouldn’t like to rule out games in the future. Ideally I’d like to make it as future proof as possible (and probably overkill for my needs) and a bit of a jack of all trades. Like everyone else I want it to be as powerful as possible within the price constraints but also be good value. To keep costs down I’m keen to pick bits up second hand (especially with the new Gen 3 chips hopefully meaning people are looking to sell Gen 2) and plan to get a lower end GPU for the short term until I have a need (if ever) for more power (something like a second hand gtx 1050 ti?).

My current spec is below - obviously this will all be completely obsolete now, but gives an idea of what I was aiming for at the time (a long long time ago):

P5Q PRO
E8400 (Overclocked)
2x2gb ddr2-800 CL4 Ballistix
4850
corsair 550w

Budget is up to £1k for new or £600ish if all second hand but isn’t completely concrete - does need to be wifi enabled, no need for a mouse or keyboard, will need to include at least one monitor although could think about this as don’t want to cut corners if I’ll want to replace it in 6 months (currently have dual benq G2420HDBL which have been great but they only have VGA input so unfortunately will need to be replaced).

I’m thinking 3600xt or 3700x - but then wondered if the original 3600 might give the best value for money? Below is a rough list I’ve put together, with GPU and monitor to be added:

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £852.15 (includes shipping: £12.30)

Any thoughts would be great!

Wouldn’t change anything from that list. It’s pretty solid.

but would advise to shop around. Especially now we are close to Black Friday etc.
Cheers - that’s the plan! Ideally looking to pick some bits up second hand too. Any recommendations on a GPU to tide me over?

Cheers for the replies!

I’ll go for 3600 instead!

Not really thought about budget for GPU / monitor - don’t intend on playing games at the moment so my logic was an older second hand GPU for now - any suggestions? In terms of monitor probably an ultrawide rather than dual screens but probably looking at £200-£250 - admittedly haven’t done much research as that’ll be the last thing I pick up depending on what parts I buy new/second hand! Shame I can’t see the marketplace on here but I’m a way off getting enough posts :D
