New build ~£1200

Hi all,

I am considering a new build and am thinking about the below spec for this:

I am looking to use this system mainly for games and general multitasking uses. Another critical need of the system is that its fairly quiet!

I am unsure which is generally thought of as being the better choice with regards to the graphics card, whether to go with two 4870's or one 4870X2. I think this could be the biggest flaw with the build.

I would be grateful for any feedback you guys could leave me as I haven't done a build for a few years now!

Defonatly the 4870X2, and leaves more possibilty of upgrading the future.
I would ditch the rapture and get the Sammung F1 1Tera.
Also i would go for either for the antec 300 or 1200 or something entirly.
MX-2 i personally consider better, the temps are the same to arctic silver but isnt conductive like AS5.
Also maybe a better cooler would be ideal for high overclocking like the Noctua.
Also i dont know what the specifications for two 4870x2 are but i dont think 750W would be enough, but i dont know.
 
I thought that a 4870X2 maybe better for upgrading purposes and what not in the future.

The HDD is not a massive issue for me really, I am unsure as to how much a positive effect 10,000RPM has compared to your standard HDD.
On that note I was considering a larger one at 7,200RPM doubt I would ever use 1TB though!!

With regards to cooler I am completely in the dark, never have I done overclocking on my own components (Left the risk to my mates :P) so didnt actually plan on overclocking much if at all! A fan thats quieter and improves temperatures is what I would be after rather than something that opens the window for overclocking substantially

Well many people say the raptor is faster and snappier.
But to me the price/performance isnt so hot.
I would say keep the raptor for OS/Applications. And have a seperate HDD for storage like a Sammsung F1 320GB or 640GB.
Umm if not overclocking that cooler is fine but apparently gets noisey when the fan is over 50%. Also the noctua is quieter and better temps but a fair bit more expensive.
Also if you would rather have a quieter PC, i would reccomend the Antec P182.

Also what resolution are you planning to use?
 
I like the look and more so the measurements of the P182, I think thats definately a winner right there :)

With regards to the HDD I think I will be going with a standard 7,200RPM I dont think the performance to cost will be worth it, just as you say.

I am going to be running at 1680x1050

Yeah i have the P182 and a great case and couldnt reccomend it more.
And really at that resolution you can get away with a single 4870 as that will run everything on high with a good dose of AA, except crysis and unless your a crysis nut. . . .
And when you do need some more umphhhh buy an extra 4870 and when there selling for peanuts.

Also with the P182 you only have to fit two fans to the front and would be great with low RPM fans.
Also just install the HDD in the bottom cage and take the top one out as you will have a direct air flow to the central chamber.

Think I will get a 4870X2 just for the sake of it to be honest with you, give me a decent life span and what not. Then just upgrade as neccessary. My intentions are to streth out the life for as long as possible rather than upgrade with the times!

640gb or 1tb hard drive imo. Almost as fast as Raptors but with masses of storage :) Critically, the 640gb and 1tb drives have denser platters so are faster than the 750gb u specced initially.

I believe you are suggesting the spinpoint F1 1TB?

Also, does anyone know if the 750W PSU will be substantial enough?
