Right, basically im looking at building a new compueter with a budget of £1400 in mind.

All i need is a base unit and monitor. Preferably don't want to spend more than £170 on the monitor, as would like most of the juice to be in the base unit ;)

Needs to have killer performance and be as future proof as computers can get (so ddr3 ram?)

No more than £270 on graphics, would like a nvidia card.

Thanks in advance :)

below is what i have so far, but would like to spend a bit less, any ideas or suggestions?

What do you use your PC for?

Killer performace? But you dont want to spend more than £270 on a graphics card.

I wouldnt go DDR3 right now. Not point at all. DDR3 + Nehalem = Great price/performance. Next year. :)

Well i don't do much gaming, and a bit of photoshop, so i figured £270 would be about right, basically it's not a gaming rig. As for DDR3, i think i would like to have it, as it'll mean that i don't need to upgrade my mobo next year when the RAM is cheaper. Any ideas on a better and cheaper spec than above?

I totally agree with stickroad, absolute no point in getting DDR3 RAM for the price, and defiantly get a 24" like the one stickroad suggested with that kind of budget.

Right, ok i have taken into account all your advice. I think i will change to DDR2. However, i would like to keep the £270 budget for graphics card and as above, i dont want to spend more than £180 on monitor.

Any chance someone could spec me an alternative spec?

Thanks again,

Put more into the monitor.

This is what I would go for. If your not a gamer then you dont need a £300 graphics card.

This is a great PC for your need I think.

If you dont game you really are wasting your money on that 8800 GTS GPU.

Any reason you dont want to spend more than £170 on a screen? You can easily fit one into that bugdet.

This is just general idea of what you can get within your budget, be extremely quick with programs like Photoshop and general multitasking.

You could obviously add a nice soundcard/tv card, even a fan controller if you want, also enough of a budget left to buy an OS, nice keyboard mouse etc.

I'm just wondering why you want to spend so much on a Graphics card when you don't game and why you want to spend so little on a monitor, doesn't make any sense to me.

ok guys thanks for your comments so far :)

i do game ^^ read above, just not very often, and want the computer to last a few years (dont want to end up having to upgrade gfx card).

As for not wanting an expensive monitor- the only reason is because i want the best performance out of the pc, and dont want to compramise that over buying an expensive monitor.

let me know guys, your comments are invaluable

Well people wouldn't be speccing 24" monitors if they had to compromise that much on the spec. You can fit it into your budget. Your seemingly random limits on price for certains parts of the system is not the best way to go about this.

truebluecfc's spec is the one to go for if you're not a heavy gamer.

Having a 24" screen if you do stuff like photoshop is a godsend, trust me.

Like we've shown you, you wont be compromising on anything just to get a bigger monitor, and even if you game not very often don't you think it all still be a waste, I'd probably suggest getting a G92, Nvidia's new card in November'ish as that will most likely be a lot more 'future proof' then wasting all that money on a graphics which you might not be using very often.

£1,394.61 inc VAT (excl. delivery)

4GB Ram + 24" monitor for Photoshop is VERY nice to have. You can also sell the GTX near the end of the year when the G92's come out for £240 - £260 ish, add another £40 - £50 and be set for a long time. He may not game, but I guess since the 24" monitor is in the spec he can have the best of both worlds. Also because when someone doesn't game a lot, that shouldn't mean they want to play under max settings when they do game :)

Fibby's spec is very good bar no CPU cooler, even if its not needed I'd still get one with the budget the OP's got. I still question spending that amount on a graphics card which isn't gonna be used often, just seems a waste to me.

ok, this is what i've decided to go with. if there is anything that you think must be changed please let me know.

This will be able to play the latest games in highest quality, and is very overclockable right?

fibbys spec would give you a bit more "life" to your system for a little bit more cash, quality monitor and better graphics.

Raptors are a waste! seriously don't buy one, for the extra price your paying you don't get that much of a performance boost, get a WD AAKS 750GB or something, I'd also consider getting a 24" aswell still.

I think you will find this spec terrific the board has support for ddr3 as well which most people have overlooked.
Yes put more into the monitor no pc is future proof games that you can max now on a gtx is fine
but next year who knows and you will keep the monitor and power supply the longest in my view.
