Looking to spec a new build, was going to buy a laptop but I think a desktop might be a better idea.

Looking for base unit, keyboard and mouse but don't need Windows 7 or a Monitor although I may buy one separately later on.

Looking to play some decent games and not too bothered about AMD or Intel as it doesn't seem theres as big a difference on desktops as there is with laptops.

neither.

AMD new cpus will be AM3+ only, not backwards compatible, but you can take the AM3 cpu and DDR3 ram to the new motherboard, then just change the CPU later.

Intel 1156 is being replaced by 1155 Sandy bridge.

Intel 1336 is also being dumped next year, but it does have a good range of cpus avalible at the moment, with the i7 980X being six cores with hyperthreading(so effectively 12)

The above looks good starting place, personally as you have a little budget spare I'd go for the 1gig 460 and get the western digital black 6gb/s hdd
