Hi, I'm building a new gaming rig for the first time in a LONG time, want to stick to about a £600 budget. I'd like some advice on my components and just wanted to check it's all compatible and will fit together nicely before I hit that buy button :)

I already have an SSD, OS and all peripherals. I am planning to OC the 4670K and potentially the GeForce GTX 750Ti at some point.

Here is my current basket:

Intel Core i5-4670K 3.40GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £167.99

EVGA GeForce GTX 750Ti FTW ACX 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £131.99

MSI Z87-G43 Intel Z87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £79.99

Corsair Vengeance Blue Low Profile 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (CML8GX3M2A1600C9B) £71.99

Corsair Carbide 300R Mid Tower Case - Black (CC-9011014-WW) £59.99

EVGA SuperNova NEX 750W 80 Plus Bronze Power Supply (120-PB-0750-KR) £59.99

Arctic Cooling Freezer i30 Intel Cooler £32.99

Arctic Silver Alumina Thermal Paste (1.75g) £3.98

TOTAL: £623.90 inc shipping

Any opinions or advice appreciated. I was considering faster RAM with looser timings is this worth it? Also, I've gone for low profile as I want a big cooler and don't fancy the RAM getting in the way...

thanks for you time!

^^Not a lot wrong with that. Be aware that if you do decide to go AMD, make sure you get a third party cooler (as has been specced above - awesome cooler) as the OEM one is very loud and very awful.

Thanks for your input.

I'm never keen on spending too much on a gfx card, only because they are easy to replace and get cheap quickly compared to CPU/RAM/MOBO. So replacing the 750Ti would be the next logical upgrade when the time comes.

How does the 8320 stack up against an overclocked i5-4670K?

I also notice you've chosen the faster RAM with looser timings, will this significantly outperform the Corsair RAM I chose? And will it definitely fit with the cooler you chose?

Thanks again!

The faster RAM is a good idea if you hope to overclock. The Intel is ahead performance wise in almost all applications but the gap is narrowing in games as developers make better use of AMD's architecture. Having said that an FX8320 paired to an R9 280 would stomp all over an i5 with the card you've suggested. It's all about the best balance: your machine will only perform as well as its slowest component.

To be perfectly honest I'd buy a better graphics card now. The AMD cpu will last just long as the Intel one in games with only a few fps differences between the two. The GPU will make all the difference now and is the component that will make the most difference. The below benchmark is for the 280X but it won't be very far away from the vanilla 280. When you take the benchmarks into account the choice is clear.

Here is a comparison of the 4670K and the 8320:http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/698?vs=837

Also the RAM I specced will fit under the cooler I choose and tbh I don't really see that much of a performace difference with timings.

cheers.

Defo gonna switch to your specced RAM then, any way of finding out if it will fit under the cooler/Mobo I originally specced? as I'm still quite keen on getting the 4670K for more futureproofing I think.

One more question as well, I'm planning on OCing the 4670K as I've heard it can easily hit 4.2Ghz or so. Does the 8320 OC well too?

That RAM I speeced will fit under any cooler I would still suggest getting the 8320 and a better GPU just as ExRayTed said. The 8320 will overclock just as well as the 4670K but may run hotter.

OK thanks a lot for all your thoughts and input, gonna have to mull it over for a little bit longer I think and do a bit more research. Going to pull the trigger this week though for sure, my old Core2Duo and GTS250 aren't cutting it anymore :)

Just checking out the specs for the Gigabyte 970A-UD3P AMD 970 (Socket AM3+) DDR3 Motherboard and noticed its PCI-E 2.0 (not 3.0) will that hamper its futureproofing (or the gfx card speed?)

How deep are your pockets? There isn't a single card solution out there that will be bottle-necked by that CPU, especially when you factor in overclocking. The R9 290 Tri-X is an awesome card and reasonably priced. The minimum I'd consider is either a GTX770 or R9 280

Hmm yup those are quite a bit more cash. Cheers for the suggestions, I'm gonna sleep on it I think..

OK, I've decided to put in a bit of extra cash to get the 4670K as I do use it for work, DVD ripping as well and really want a nice CPU on there. So, I need to decide on two things:

1. I need a gfx card about £200, not sure whether to get the GTX 760 or the R9 280. I love NVidia and their drivers/software, but it seems the R9 280 is faster. Are drivers and driver control panel better for AMD these days? How about lack of PhysX and other tech like 3D is that significant?

2. I need a good cooler to go on the MSI Z87-G43 mobo that isnt going to block the RAM slots etc. Any recommendations?

Thanks again for all your opinions!
