Hi All,

My first post, been browsing the site for a week or so, and see there are lots of imformative posts. I am a complete newbie to building PC's but my friend has offered to help me build my own(he has been doing it over 10 years). Basically he said that i buy the components and he will help me fit them.

I know my way around a PC, sorting problems out, and have upgraded my last PC with a new HDD and RAM, but thats as far as my "skills" in this area extend.

I have around £700.00 to spend and my main things i want from the new build are as follows:

  • Future proof (to what it can be)
  • Occasional gaming - new games
  • lots of storage for films
  • To be fast
  • Might overclock - some potential there to do that.

I have seen a few posts where people have only spent around £400.00 on systems, so i dont have to spends all the money.

I didnt know whether to go for one of the shuttles (Shuttle XPC SG33G5M Deluxe Aluminium Barebones System) barebones system or to start from scratch, any suggestions around that? Upon reading the spec, i beleieve it comes with Intel GMA 3100 graphics engine, does this mean that i dont need a graphics card? Or can i add one?
EDIT: just realised this onlys supports max 4GB RAM.

Whats peoples thoughts on the Quad core? I thought that this maybe a good idea? Any suggestions on that? It seems from what i have read that this will replace the core duo? I also read that a lot of software wasnt written for quad core so may not benefit from it yet? Not sure hwo long ago these reviews were done.

I am looking at around 4GB of memory, but a motherboard that can have further RAM upgrades in future. Also, a motherboard that can easily have upgrades to certain components.

Now me being a complete newbie, i have no idea what to get, been looking at Overclockers and browsing but its all like a foreign language, lol.

Would any one care to recommend a spec for my new PC? I would appreciate that.

I should add that i am looking at an Intel based system (or perhaps recommend me something better), with Vista OS.

Apologies if not in the correct part of the forum.

Thanks for your time.

Si:)

u mention upgrading you're last pc have you got any bits that will be moved over to the new system, mouse/keyboard/screen/dvd drive etc ?

I have mouse keyboard, dvd RW, secondary HDD of 180GB.

I am as we speak "trying" to make my own spec, should be good for a laugh, lol.

Welcome to the forums. This is ever so slightly over the budget but I think includes everything you require, if the budget is very important then you could drop the aftermarket cooler. :)

OK with your preference to speed I've included some PC2-8500 RAM, on a motherboard that can support DDR3 further down the line, and also I think a large cache on a hard drive is a must so have opted for the 32MB cache Seagate. I think the GFX card might be slightly OTT but its still within budget and is great for the money, all you need to add on to that lot is a case :)

Thanks Guys, i'll have a look at the components now, and come back to you.

Regarding cases, i want a small one, not like a tower one, similar to the shuttles in size. Any suggestions?

The problem is that a small case usually requires an mATX motherboard which limits you somewhat with regard to components you can use and the overclocking options.

Do you need a monitor with the system?

No, no monitor, ok, so smaller units limit what you can do. I suppose any thing smaller than what i have now then! its about 1.5ft high. nice.

Hi Guys,

Whilst looking at your recommendations, have sort of built my own. Never done this before so bear with me, this is what i put together;

Abit IP35 Pro (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard

GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB6400UDC)

Thermaltake VB1000SNS Soprano SuperMidi Tower - Silver

Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate 64-Bit Edition DVD - OEM - 1Pk

Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "Energy Efficient SLACR 95W Edition" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - Retail

OCZ StealthXStream 600w Silent SLI Ready ATX2 Power Supply

OcUK ATI Radeon HD 3850 Pro 512MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail

Western Digital WD5000AAKS 500GB SATA II 7200RPM 16MB Cache

Any thoughts on the above? Suggestions? Dont laugh, lol.

Also, i dont want a SFF any more as per the previous comments regarding limits it has,

Cheers guys.

It all looks good there, I'm not a fan of the looks of the case but then that is very much down to personal preference so go with it if you like it. The only other point I'd make relates to Vista Ultimate, do you need all the features of Ultimate? If not you could save a fair bit by picking Vista Premium. :)

totally agree with above

dont waste money on vista ultimate, just get home premium

and with the cash saved maybe a nicer case or a better cpu cooler

thanks for your suggestions, i think your right about the case and Vista. I have changed. In response to a better CPU cooler, is the supplied with the CPU retail package not very good? - i assume for overclocking i will need a better one.

One question, i have a HDD i would like to bring with me to the new machine, i havent looked, but from memory i think its IDE, dont think the mobo i have mentioned above has IDE on it, so can you buy "converters" to attach to IDE to SATA?

Does that make sense?
