I would like a new build for a FSX PC hence the intel, if you think the Ryzan are as good for FSX I could consider that. I have a 1TB SSD and screen already, need everything else, upgrading from an old Q6600 system.

I thought something built around the intel i5 8400 would do fine in FSX and be a lot better than the old system.

No other games are played, so don't need a super graphics card, was thinking the 1660 non TI would be fine as FSX doesn't use the GPU that much compared to the CPU.

Would like to see your opinions!

When you have waited for this long might as well wait month for Zen2 Ryzens.
Those should stir CPU markets like original Ryzen did.

Also price of RAM is coming down, which would help with keeping budget.

Are you reusing any other parts besides SSD?
Though suspect even case is such ancient that it's not really fit for gaming PC.

I appreciate the waiting sentiment however it's needed now, I know what ever comes out in a month will be better but I don't need the best, heck this PC has run FSX fine for the last 8 or so years , so whatever new system I get will be better than that. The reason for the upgrade is the old PC is developing faults, won't boot sometimes and randomly blue screens, this is after a fresh OS install too.

For FSX your going to want as much single core performance as possible and to stick to Intel as the game doesn't play well with Ryzen due to its age.

The boast speed on the New i5 seems decent, the general thought is 4ghz and above for best FSX performance, and the price doesn't seem significantly higher than the 8400.

Any recommendations on a M/B and ram to go with that? I assume any new midi case will work with these motherboards?

Is that after it has been disconnected from the wall?
PSU's capacitors could be failing.
Ironicially while heat shortens their life time, capacitors in bad shape can start working just enough after warming up.
(BIOS battery could be also dying)

For budget I would recommend Bitfenix Formula.

It will boot after been left off overnight more reliably, so could be the capacitors, but I am on a mission to buy a new PC and while I appreciate everyone trying to stop me, suggestions on a intel build for around 800-850 would be better as I have made my decision to upgrade.

This would do the job on a budget - and yes any midi case will do for below - but your cooler would have to be taken in to consideration depending on what you use:

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £375.47 (includes shipping: £10.50)

Thanks for that Plec, the M/B says AMD crossfire, I assume as I am not going to link two video cards these feature doesn't matter to me, and Nvidia will not suffer any issues in a single card config.

Yes, not a problem.

*Should add - Gigabyte is UK RMA and has excellent Rep support on the fourms via @GIGA-Man.

I have come up with this, don't mind spending more to get the 8600k as it seems to be better in games. Can someone look over it and see if I have mucked up anything compatibility wise?

Everything is compatible - if you had extra money the addition of a 120mm front fan for the Nova would be beneficial especially if clocking. And that said:

As you've bought a K series CPU clocking is mandatory. You're moving on from classic q6600 (g0 stepping?) so i presume your familiar with the basics. If so i would consider spending another £20 on a better cooler and the Scythe Mugen gives excellent performance to buck ratio - matching top coolers on performance and silence - Clicky.

OK thanks a lot for your help Plec, much appreciated! I will probably overclock at some point, will run it at base speeds at first (4.30ghz turbo seems good to me!) Ordering this system later today then :-)
