Right, I have been looking around for components to build a machine for a friend of mine. Here's what I've come up with:

Core 2 Quad Q6700 G0 stepping + world in conflict £140
Gigabyte GA-X48-DS5 £100
PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750W Quad-Crossfire £84
WD Caviar Black 500GB 7200RPM 32MB cache £45
Kingston HyperX 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 1066MHz 5-5-5 15 2.1V £40
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler £18
XFX ATI Radeon HD 4890 XT 1GB GDDR5 875MHz + HAWX £141

shipping £10.50

then CM Centurion 590 case for £55 at a localshop

Total:
£633.5

We were hoping for under the £600 mark, but oh well.
Any comments or suggestions on the build? We would have aquired a 2nd hand motherboard but can't really find any decent ones. Also - that gpu deal ends after this week.

maybe have a look at the Coolermaster Elite 335 Case.

wont need the 750w psu 600/650w should be enough for that spec.

could chop a bit of by going for a 1gb 4870, what size monitor/res is he looking to use ?

That's a lot of spec for your £600+ - you shouldn't have any problems running anything you throw at it.

mp260767's, right you could opt for a smaller wattage PSU - and if you did i would go for Corsair.

However, i like the 4890 at that price - but if money is tight then the 4870 would serve you well.

All the corsair ones with adequate wattage come in at over £80. Also he is thinking of getting another 4890 in about a year to crossfire that beast up.

Neither of us like the look of the CM elite, that belt across the midle looks naff :D
Well, were going on a case hunt today to get a nice deal - also not placing the order on ocuk till we get back incase we find a nice deal on something locally ^_^, delivery would be after the weekend anyway and the 4890 deal still stands this evening.

edit:
as for res, only 1280 x 1024. However, everyone seems to be upgrading to higher res/widescreen now - getting this gpu now will serve him down the line. Nice fps levels are good to have, the gpu will need to be good performance to see 100+ in most games on full for the next few years (excluding crysis/gta4/prototype etc lol, but they're messed up)

Personally Id go AMD over intel
this mobo and CPU is both better and offers better future upgradability, as well as being £20 cheaper

AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 955 Black Edition 3.2GHz (Socket AM3) - Retail £160.99 (£139.99)
Asus M4A78 AMD 770 (Socket AM3/AM2+) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard £59.98 (£52.16)

Edit: also you can get the coolermaster690 from here for £50 (on TWO), better case and £5 cheaper

Get rid of the quad, there is no upgrade path with that one and once he wants to upgrade he will have to ditch both cpu+mobo

Get a decent AMD mobo and a middle range phenom II (no point getting top cpu at anytime). That will come in cheaper AND provide an upgrade path where you can keep the mobo. Phenom II won't have any issue with games and standard apps.
