Hi All,

Well its that time again, my old system has finally ground to a stop and I need to buy a new one, box only, I will be re-using the current KB, Mouse and Monitor.

So could you gentle peeps please check over the list below to make sure I have not forgotten something obvious since its been far to many years since I built the last one.

The system will be mostly used for Gaming, WoTanks, Elite Dangerous and for the OH's Photography so Photoshop etc, as well as the usual web browsing office type stuff.

Below is the list so far, I have an 128GB SSD already which I will be using for the OS but not sure which flavour of 1TB drive to get to store the other software and such, I don't need to much storage as I have a NAS on the network. The only other decision is the CPU Cooler, the last one i used was a Freezer 7 Pro, pretty sure there will be a better one out now so any Ideas would be great.

Hi,

What SSD is it? this is important as some early Sandforce controllers do not work with Z87+97 chipsets.

A seagate barracuda 1TB drive will be fine.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Seagate Barracuda 1TB 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache - OEM (ST1000DM003) HDD £44.99
Total : £48.90 (includes shipping : £3.26).

As for coolers,

YOUR BASKET
1 x BeQuiet! Pure Rock Cpu Cooler - 120mm £28.99
1 x Raijintek Themis Direct Contact CPU Cooler £19.99
Total : £58.58 (includes shipping : £8.00).

Those are both instock and decent.

Why not Windows 8.1 either?

Hi Stulid,

The SSD is a Crucial M500 120GB that I picked up about 6 months ago.

Will those coolers cope with a mild OC, I will probably run the 4790k stock for a while then start to play with the OC later.

As for Win 7,its what I am used to at work, would 8.1 be that much of an upgrade to be worth dealing with a new OS ?

Thanks for your time.

Hi,

Yes those coolers sure are capable of a good OC on the CPU.

Win8.1 I find is quicker to use, it just seems more responsive than Win7.

Your SSD is also fine:)

If you push to your maximum budget then you can have a case with a window,

it has no external drive bays for clean look.

Right,

The case will be under a desk so a Window while nice would be wasted, and Ill probably throw in a Blue-Ray at some point to finish ripping my movies to the NAS, so I think I will go with the first basket you put up.

May as well take the plunge with 8.1 as well.

Many thanks for the help and brain check Stulid, good to know I was not to far off the mark after all that.

Regards
Hamish
